How to add more Speed Dials in Opera?
Published June 13th, 2008 6:14 AM EDT By TamilOpera has 9 Speed Dials by default but you can add more in Opera 9.50.
- Note the path to Opera directory (Help → About Opera).
- Close Opera.
- Open speeddial.ini file in any text editor from Opera directory.
- Add the following lines and adjust number of rows & columns to your requirement. If you use widescreen monitor, increase number of columns.
[Size]
Rows=4
Columns=4 - Start Opera.

Click on image to view fullsize
Keyboard shortcuts CTRL+1 to CTRL+9 will open Speed Dials 1-9 respectively.
To open extra Speed Dials using keyboard shortcut, create new keyboard shortcuts in Application section with action Go to speed dial, X where X is Speed Dial number.
Set opera:config#UserPrefs|SpeedDialSearchType to 0 to remove Speed Dial search box.

Yes this is one feature I’ve been using for a couple of weeks now. Fantastic and very glad that it was added.
using
indeed, great find by remco.
I wonder why such a requested feature wasn’t advertised by opera?
using
This is one terrific suggestion by a fellow Dutchman!!
using
How will this work over Opera Link? How will the interface at My Opera react on this? Will all speed dials be syncronized with other web browsers? How about Opera mini?
using
Its Opera 9.5, not 9.50
using
Actually it is 9.50. You know, the last stable release was 9.27. For some odd marketing reason they some times refer to it as 9.5
using
It won’t. Just the first 9 are synced. But that’s ok as far as I’m concerned anyway
using
It’s both 9.5 and 9.50 actually.
using
Is there any way of changing the numbering so that the layout on the screen matches the number pad on PC keyboard? That way the Ctrl+number shortcuts would be much more memorable
Currently, only the middle row is in the right place!
using
This is great! They realy should be adding this as an option!
using
This would be way more useful if the speed dial screenshots would stay the same size or if there was some way to specify the size. Adding more items is nice but the small screenshots makes it hard to see them. It would be better if it could fill he screen on larger resolutions.
using
any chance to remove the search bar?
can be done?
using
Nice tip! Only three columns seemed wasted in my case, nice to have 5 now!
I use the most frequently accessed sites in slots 1-9 (w/ keyboard shortcuts), and others in the rest - that solves the keyboard shortcut problem for me.
using
mat:
In opera:config, set “Speed Dial Search Type” to zero to remove the search bar from speed dial.
using
Chuck thanks for that tip. I changed the value to 39 and got it to search with Google.
Even if that trick is pretty cool to have additional speed dial… I don’t see myself using more than the default 9.
using
Can I use this method on the mac? I couldn’t seem to find the speeddial.ini file anywhere.
using
To see location, copy and paste the following in address bar.
opera:config#Speed Dial File
using
I got it. Thanks! But I wonder why I can’t find it with Spotlight…
using
adjusting the number of speed dial buttons needs to be put into the brower’s Preferences; why edit speeddial.ini manually?
using
No problem PhoenixP3K
(You can also set the Speed Dial page search engine from Preferences > Search > Double click search engine you want, click Details, and check “Use as Speed Dial search engine”)
using
I think the worst part is the “Note”
using
@Derek
You can go into the Advanced>Shortcuts>Keyboard Setup section of the preferences and change the keys required for the speed dial slots to whatever you wish. Of course that won’t change the number beside them but if you can get your brain to accept the numeric keypad layout and ignore the number beside them then you’ll be fine.
using
Yeah, great trick.
using
This is nice, I have some websites at work which are blocked, and some work related sites which I don’t want at home.
I can select 12 speeddials, have the first 9 common, and the last 3 work and home specific!!
Sweet…

thanx a lot, chuck, it worked!
using
Sure thing mat
I like it better without the search box too
using
Thanks for sharing these tweaks!
Tamil, how can I create a keyboard shortcut for showing/hiding the Personal Bar? Or even create a shortcut for a particular bookmark?
using
Love the Speed Dial - but I need more pages
Found this and loving it !
Hope Opera goes this route too
using
great tip!!!
using
> Note: Opera will sync Speed Dials 1-9 only.
That’s simply not true. It does actually sync all Speeddials.
How do I know? I’ve a desktop and a laptop side by side.
using
I’ m sorry to temper all this enthusiasm, but I don’t like & don’t need that speed dial page!
I’m using my self-made htlm start page as home page for years now. Ages before they came with this feature. All I want is to completely get rid of speed dial (not even an button) and open all new tabs with my usual home page.
How could I do that ?
using
Create a new keyboard shortcut with the following action.
View personal bar, 0 | View personal bar, 6How do you open a new tab (keyboard shortcut or mouse gesture or button)?
using
That is not true. I have 12 Speeddials (4 columns, 3 rows on a widescreen monitor). I added one at home to Field 12 and it appeared here at work as 12.
But currently, I only have 9 used… 5,6 and 7 are unused…
using
Hello, I opened my speeddial.ini and it does not have size anywhere?
using
Uhm. Nevermind. Didn’t see the big ADD part there :S
using
i think the worts part is the “note”
using
I still dont get it. I’ve been lookin a while now, but I still cant find the size!
using
I got it now. Add it ofcourse… i’m such a nub :p
using
I use vista , in users/…/ i cant find the Appdata folder.. any help?
using
Appdata folder is hidden by default.
Explorer → Tools → Folder Options… → View → Advanced settings → Hidden files and folders → Show hidden files and folders
using
You really have no idea how much you ROCK! Awesome. Thx!
using
What about linux?
using
@fixman:
/home/user/.opera
using
So is there any way to adjust the resolution on the Speed Dial page? It would be great to have the extra speed dials fill the screen rather than shrink to fit a pre determined resolution.
Loving Opera!
using
how do you do that in oper 9.51
using
Well… I fell in love with the 9 I had in v9.27 and LOST the speed-dial completely with the update… so I switched back
I tried, did all the speeddial.ini ADDs and edits. but mine will not get bigger than 3×3
Setting the Search Bar value to 0 got me Google. Setting it to -39 killed it and moved up all the speeddials, but I still cannot get 3*4 or 4*4 (or anything other than 3*3
Anyone tell me why SDial is missing on v9.5 and or why edits don’t work in 9.27??
Thx!
using
I think it’s worth mentioning that increasing the number of speed dials could potentially break synchronization with Opera Mini… for good.
It’s documented here: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=240251
I loved having 15 speed dials until it broke my opera link to my Mini, and I had to create a whole new link account just to sync.
Just wanted to let people know to be a bit careful.
using
@IT_Guru:
[size] is a feature of 9.5 and not implemented in former versions.
And Speeddial isn’t missing 9.5, it’s more likely that you deactivated it by accident.
using
Very simple. Very nice. Thank you verily.
using
Good, that’s nice.
4×4 must be the default speed dial.
using
Thanks for sharing such information

i appended the text that is mentioned here in the speeddial.ini file but no additional speed dials showed up :(….
using
