How to add more Speed Dials in Opera?

Opera has 9 Speed Dials by default but you can add more in Opera 9.50.

  1. Note the path to Opera directory (Help → About Opera).
  2. Close Opera.
  3. Open speeddial.ini file in any text editor from Opera directory.
  4. Add the following lines and adjust number of rows & columns to your requirement. If you use widescreen monitor, increase number of columns.

    [Size]
    Rows=4
    Columns=4

  5. Start Opera.

Keyboard shortcuts CTRL+1 to CTRL+9 will open Speed Dials 1-9 respectively.

To open extra Speed Dials using keyboard shortcut, create new keyboard shortcuts in Application section with action Go to speed dial, X where X is Speed Dial number.

Set opera:config#UserPrefs|SpeedDialSearchType to 0 to remove Speed Dial search box.

Yes this is one feature I’ve been using for a couple of weeks now. Fantastic and very glad that it was added. :)

  2. 2 Rhonnysparks

    indeed, great find by remco.
I wonder why such a requested feature wasn’t advertised by opera?

  3. 3 Jezetha

This is one terrific suggestion by a fellow Dutchman!!

  4. 4 Daniel Aleksandersen

How will this work over Opera Link? How will the interface at My Opera react on this? Will all speed dials be syncronized with other web browsers? How about Opera mini?

  5. 5 Juan

    Its Opera 9.5, not 9.50

  6. 6 Daniel Aleksandersen

Actually it is 9.50. You know, the last stable release was 9.27. For some odd marketing reason they some times refer to it as 9.5

  7. 7 mrd

How will this work over Opera Link?

It won’t. Just the first 9 are synced. But that’s ok as far as I’m concerned anyway :)

  8. 8 larrilaffer

    It’s both 9.5 and 9.50 actually.

Is there any way of changing the numbering so that the layout on the screen matches the number pad on PC keyboard? That way the Ctrl+number shortcuts would be much more memorable

Currently, only the middle row is in the right place!

  10. 10 L-mo

This is great! They realy should be adding this as an option!

  11. 11 Megan

This would be way more useful if the speed dial screenshots would stay the same size or if there was some way to specify the size. Adding more items is nice but the small screenshots makes it hard to see them. It would be better if it could fill he screen on larger resolutions.

any chance to remove the search bar?

    can be done?

  13. 13 Chuck Monroe

Nice tip! Only three columns seemed wasted in my case, nice to have 5 now!

I use the most frequently accessed sites in slots 1-9 (w/ keyboard shortcuts), and others in the rest – that solves the keyboard shortcut problem for me.

  14. 14 Chuck Monroe

    mat:

In opera:config, set “Speed Dial Search Type” to zero to remove the search bar from speed dial.

  15. 15 PhoenixP3K

Chuck thanks for that tip. I changed the value to 39 and got it to search with Google.

Even if that trick is pretty cool to have additional speed dial… I don’t see myself using more than the default 9.

  16. 16 Calvin

Can I use this method on the mac? I couldn’t seem to find the speeddial.ini file anywhere.

  17. 17 Tamil

I couldn’t seem to find the speeddial.ini file anywhere.

To see location, copy and paste the following in address bar.

    opera:config#Speed Dial File

  18. 18 Calvin

I got it. Thanks! But I wonder why I can’t find it with Spotlight…

  19. 19 d_l_v

adjusting the number of speed dial buttons needs to be put into the brower’s Preferences; why edit speeddial.ini manually?

  20. 20 Chuck Monroe

    No problem PhoenixP3K :)

(You can also set the Speed Dial page search engine from Preferences > Search > Double click search engine you want, click Details, and check “Use as Speed Dial search engine”)

  21. 21 Juan

I think the worst part is the “Note” :(

  22. 22 mrd

    @Derek

You can go into the Advanced>Shortcuts>Keyboard Setup section of the preferences and change the keys required for the speed dial slots to whatever you wish. Of course that won’t change the number beside them but if you can get your brain to accept the numeric keypad layout and ignore the number beside them then you’ll be fine.

  23. 23 Tobbi

    Yeah, great trick.

  24. 24 Mark

This is nice, I have some websites at work which are blocked, and some work related sites which I don’t want at home.

I can select 12 speeddials, have the first 9 common, and the last 3 work and home specific!!

    Sweet…

thanx a lot, chuck, it worked!

  26. 26 Chuck Monroe

Sure thing mat :) I like it better without the search box too

  27. 27 Kalin Georgiev

    Thanks for sharing these tweaks!

Tamil, how can I create a keyboard shortcut for showing/hiding the Personal Bar? Or even create a shortcut for a particular bookmark?

  28. 28 Donzi

Love the Speed Dial – but I need more pages

Found this and loving it !

Hope Opera goes this route too

  29. 29 pollaki

    great tip!!!

  30. 30 black_caeser

    > Note: Opera will sync Speed Dials 1-9 only.

That’s simply not true. It does actually sync all Speeddials.

How do I know? I’ve a desktop and a laptop side by side.

  31. 31 fonty

I’ m sorry to temper all this enthusiasm, but I don’t like & don’t need that speed dial page!

I’m using my self-made htlm start page as home page for years now. Ages before they came with this feature. All I want is to completely get rid of speed dial (not even an button) and open all new tabs with my usual home page.

How could I do that ?

  32. 32 Tamil

how can I create a keyboard shortcut for showing/hiding the Personal Bar?

Create a new keyboard shortcut with the following action.
View personal bar, 0 | View personal bar, 6

All I want is to completely get rid of speed dial (not even an button) and open all new tabs with my usual home page.

How do you open a new tab (keyboard shortcut or mouse gesture or button)?

  33. 33 Smir

Note: Opera will sync Speed Dials 1-9 only.

That is not true. I have 12 Speeddials (4 columns, 3 rows on a widescreen monitor). I added one at home to Field 12 and it appeared here at work as 12.
    But currently, I only have 9 used… 5,6 and 7 are unused…

  34. 34 Jtickner1

Hello, I opened my speeddial.ini and it does not have size anywhere?

  35. 35 jtickner1

Uhm. Nevermind. Didn’t see the big ADD part there :S :P

  36. 36 oyun indir

i think the worts part is the “note”

  37. 37 Roger

I still dont get it. I’ve been lookin a while now, but I still cant find the size!

  38. 38 Roger

    I got it now. Add it ofcourse… i’m such a nub :p

  39. 39 PAt

I use vista , in users/…/ i cant find the Appdata folder.. any help?

  40. 40 Tamil

Appdata folder is hidden by default.

Explorer → Tools → Folder Options… → View → Advanced settings → Hidden files and folders → Show hidden files and folders

  41. 41 Alamgir Kahn

You really have no idea how much you ROCK! Awesome. Thx!

  42. 42 fixman

    What about linux? :)

  43. 43 black_caeser

    @fixman:

    /home/user/.opera

  44. 44 mike

So is there any way to adjust the resolution on the Speed Dial page? It would be great to have the extra speed dials fill the screen rather than shrink to fit a pre determined resolution.

    Loving Opera!

  45. 45 The Ooood

how do you do that in oper 9.51

  46. 46 IT_Guru

Well… I fell in love with the 9 I had in v9.27 and LOST the speed-dial completely with the update… so I switched back ;-)

I tried, did all the speeddial.ini ADDs and edits. but mine will not get bigger than 3×3 :-(
Setting the Search Bar value to 0 got me Google. Setting it to -39 killed it and moved up all the speeddials, but I still cannot get 3*4 or 4*4 (or anything other than 3*3

Anyone tell me why SDial is missing on v9.5 and or why edits don’t work in 9.27??

    Thx!

  47. 47 annafil

I think it’s worth mentioning that increasing the number of speed dials could potentially break synchronization with Opera Mini… for good.

    It’s documented here: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=240251

I loved having 15 speed dials until it broke my opera link to my Mini, and I had to create a whole new link account just to sync. :(

Just wanted to let people know to be a bit careful.

  48. 48 black_caeser

    @IT_Guru:

[size] is a feature of 9.5 and not implemented in former versions.

And Speeddial isn’t missing 9.5, it’s more likely that you deactivated it by accident.

  49. 49 Owen

Very simple. Very nice. Thank you verily.

  50. 50 Kunther

    Good, that’s nice.

4×4 must be the default speed dial.

  51. 51 Ravi

    Thanks for sharing such information

  52. 52 venom

i appended the text that is mentioned here in the speeddial.ini file but no additional speed dials showed up :( ….

    using Opera 9.22

You have to use Opera 9.5x

  54. 54 venom

thnxxxx for ur quick reply :)

  55. 55 JC

In 9.6, I can no longer remover the search box in Speed Dial, even with 0 in opera:config#UserPrefs|SpeedDialSearchType.

  56. 56 Tamil

@JC, You should post questions regarding snapshots in Desktop team blog or beta testing forum.

  57. 57 jamuna

i added the number thing, but it still remains as 3*3

  58. 58 Tamil

And what about the version for Mac OS X? How do I proceed to increase the speed dial slots?

  64. 64 Tamil

See this and follow above instructions.

  65. 65 Henk

Where can i find that speeddial.ini file?!

  66. 66 Tamil

    See this.

  67. 67 Henk

    Google pops up..

    i dont understand..

  68. 68 Matti Star

Thanks for the advices on using this feature with Mac OSX. Very helpful. Its working excelent with my new Macbook.

  69. 69 Tamil

@Henk, you can find it inside profile folder.

  70. 70 alessio

of course you need to make a gui menu for this in opera preferences… for me it’s simple to do this but not for unexperienced users :D

  71. 71 Bobsule

I can´t help, but using opera 9.61 I am not able to use this tip. I added those three lines about size, but it doesn’t seem to work…. :-(
    (Still 3×3 squares)

  72. 72 MsDiddlie

I still can’t figure out how to do this. Where is Opera’s text editor and where is the directory. How do you type speed.ini with Opera closed.
I know I must be a dummy so I need support for dummies. ha

  73. 73 Chika

    thanks ya
    it works great

  74. 74 MsDiddlie

When I open about:opera and try to click on the preference it does nothing. It doesn’t respond at all.

  75. 75 Tamil

Open about:opera, copy path to Opera directory under Paths, paste it in your file manager (explorer) and find speeddial.ini file there.

  76. 76 Muncher

    Freakin’ awesome!

  77. 77 MsDiddlie

I guess I’m just not getting it. I finally found a thing called speed.ini but it is part of Opera. When I closed Opera it closed too.
I know it must be simple but I’m embarrassed to say I can’t do it. I went to file and opened a new tab. In the search I copied this:C:\Users\myname\AppData\Roaming\Opera\Opera\profile\. That took me to the page I found the speeddial.ini. I don’t think I would be able to edit that at all.

  78. 78 tercüme

    Useful and effectual informations. Thanks

  79. 79 Tamil

That took me to the page I found the speeddial.ini. I don’t think I would be able to edit that at all.

Open speeddial.ini file in notepad (or any text editor) and edit.

  80. 80 MsDiddlie

How in the World do you open the speeddial.ini in notepad? I tried every way I can think of. Same old error message (link not found).

  81. 81 Tamil

Right click on speeddial.ini → Open with → Choose Program… → [SELECT] Notepad → OK

    or

Open Notepad and drag & drop speeddial.ini file.

  82. 82 Nick

Great way to learn about .ini
Opera seems like fun, thanks for the tip.
