What happened to Opera Mobile 9.0?

By now you’ve probably already heard of the Opera Mobile 9.5 announcement. I know many of you have wondered why we’ve skipped Opera Mobile 9.0 in favor of version 9.5.

Here’s why.

The Opera Mobile browser will include the same rendering engine, Presto, as the Opera 9.5 desktop browser. In addition, the Opera SDK (Software Development Kit) that is used for embedded devices also uses the latest Presto rendering engine.

It only made sense to align Opera Mobile with the Opera desktop browser and SDK, and use the same version 9.5 number – after all it’s essentially the very same browser, just in different devices.

This helps reinforce our belief in the ‘One Web’ concept regardless of the device it’s accessed on.

    What about Opera Mini? :-)

It got some kind of “9.5 rendering engine”, right?

  2. 2 Daniel Goldman

Yes, Opera Mini also uses the latest Presto rendering engine.

    So Presto ot Kestrel, huh?

  4. 4 Daniel Goldman

Presto is the rendering engine in Kestrel (the code name for Opera 9.5).

Whatever happened to the Palm version of Opera Mobile that was announced last year: http://operawatch.com/news/2007/04/opera-9-is-coming-to-the-palm.html

The press release seems to indicate that this will only be available for win mobile and symbian. Is a palm version on the horizon?

The Video for 9.5 face and I, quite frankly, can’t wait to show it off to my smug IPhone-toting friends. However, I have a practical problem. I discovered Opera Mobile when I upgraded my old Siemens SX66 to a WM6 ATT-Tilt and was looking for something better than its built-in PIE.

I am still in the trial period for 8.65 and have no problem paying for browsing software that will have more value than a lot to me than most of the other software on my WM6 phone. However, I would hate to buy something and then have it become obsolete overnight. I realize that Opera is probably waiting for the 11th to make any big announcements. Still, It would be very helpful to know the following:

    1. Is there a plan to release at least a public beta of Opera Mobile 9.5 in first quarter 2008?

    2. If I purchase Opera Mobile 8.65 now, will I be eligible for a no-cost or discounted upgrade to OM 9.5 when it is released?

Grizlupo, I haven’t heard anything regarding pricing yet. When I hear something, I’ll report back here.

Comeon Dan, I’ve been checking your blog almost everyday to find out if you’d posted about the Palm version. Have you got any info on it?

Qasim, the Palm version we released for Opera was for the Palm Foleo (which Palm stopped making).
