On New Years Eve Opera sponsored a Norwegian fighter at the K-1 fighting match in Japan.

I don’t know much about this event, but it’s apparently pretty big in Japan. The previous year’s event was seen on Japanese TV by almost 20 million people, which is about 20% of the population.

The fighter, Joachim Hansen, wore pants with the Opera logo during the fight and an Opera cap and t-shirt for the entrance, exit, and interview time.

Here are some photos and a video of the match.

Marital arts? What do those consist of ;)

It’s not K1. You can’t fight laying on the floor in K1. And K1 fighters have to use mittens like in boxing. It’s propably Ultimate fight or stuff like that.

    Opera kick ***! :-D

What is that? Without the end I would not get who won, possibly the japanese. And one more thing I don’t get: how can Opera sponzor this kind of “sport”. I mean it should not do that, beeng “opera” and not bulldozer.

What happened to the comment I posted? Well whatever, ‘marital’ should be ‘martial’. if you find my previous comment please put it where it belongs.

It was a K-1 promoted event. K-1 does MMA as well as kickboxing for those who didn’t know that. Ultimate Fighting is the term that the UFC liked to use back in the day. MMA or Mixed Martial Arts is what people call it these days. And yes it’s actually a real sport, not a “sport”. According to all statistics I’ve seen it’s safer than say boxing, horseriding and many other sports. This fight was decent and Hansen won with a choke for those of you who didn’t understand what happened.

I agree with the Werwolf. Maybe it’s because I don’t like any of those sports, wrestling, boxing, etc.

Is there any similar pants for sale? :p

It was from the K-1 Dynamite!! 2007 event and this particular fight was under MMA rules.

The sport is MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and some famous MMA promotions include UFC, CageRage, EliteXC and the defunct PRIDE.

It’s great to see my favourite browser and my favourite sport together :)

This was stage one of a long term plan. Now he has completed his training fight, we will let him loose on Asa Dotzler, then finally Steve Ballmer.

    I thought that was Olli’s job :P

David Storey, I thought we were supposed to keep our plans and strategy on a need-to-know basis. :)

Asa has a reputation for dirty tactics in the ring and Ballmers’ use of flying chairs is second to none, I wouldn’t put my money on this weird viking guy in a speedo…

Argh! You guys spoiled the fight! I was going to watch the K1 event right now, after finishing UFC 79 and the Yarennoka event. As for Joachim Hansen, I think he’s a decent fighter and deserves a shot in the UFC or HDNet fights.

I think the other was IE. He got kicked in the butt.

Our strategy is to utilize the Norwegian power for the branding to let generic peoples know about Opera in Japan. In fact, the video was watched by more than 14,894 peoples so far.

Has the downloads increased after the match?
