Oh my! Not Netscape! How sad.

Still, the past few versions had just been Firefox in a Netscape suit anyway. Guess it just wasn’t worth it any more.

  2. 2 BAMAToNE

    So many memories…

  3. 3 Seji

This is so sad… It was my first browser (4.02 IIRC).

  4. 4 IceArdor

Yay! Netscrape is gone! Is Internet Exploder next?

  5. 5 Jezetha

Yes, this brings back memories - getting online in a Rotterdam library for the first time, in 1994…

  6. 6 mrd

Shame to see the Netscape name go even if it has been little more than a slightly (or more) messed up Mozilla/Firefox for a while.

  7. 7 Werwolf

Unbelievable nonsence after so much work on 9.0. Why now, when the work is done? Why? I use Opera, but I loved Netscapes courage to go its onw way.
    :(

    Girefox seems terrible!!!

I can not stop repeating: “Why”?

Gecko was a child of Netscape!!! Firefox is a descendent es well.

    I see idiots are everywhere.

  8. 8 Dava

I’m surprised it lasted this long. Still its sad for those of us that remember Netscape when it was the main web browser.

I wonder how many of the few Netscape users are going to adopt Opera as their default browser?

    Dava

Probably not many, most will (and already have) gone to using firefox.

  10. 10 MeTaTRóN

This is sad! Right now I’m writing this in Netscape 9 which is my default browser. I had used all the version since 3.0 to the last and the version 9 was a brave attempt since 3.0 to give us a real nice browser.
Well, Rest in piece Netscape and may your children continue your work.

  11. 11 Steve Barker

I was hoping that with Netscape 9 coming out for Linux that there would be a push to progress and develop Netscape. However, I had been intending to install Netscape 9 for Linux for a while, and have not managed to get arround to it!

Used Netscape in the early 90s when researching my thesis (and for less serious matters). It was the best thing since sliced bread then, but for many things such as the science citation index etc. still had to use Telnet. Have not used Netscape since about 1995.

Even though I have not used Netscape recently I am very sad to see this new; we need as many Microsoft alternatives as possible, so that if one falls threre are others still standing.

  12. 12 w2

i wouldnt bash netscape too hard, or make any stupid jokes about their failure - out of all browsers opera is closest to its own nice ‘RIP’ stone.

given that most devs simply ignore it’s existence it is goint to be much sooner than later :)

  13. 13 Philry4n

I only used netscape once back in mid 90s so no fond memories.

@w2 RIP for Opera soon? I hope not :p

i think Opera gains profit from deals on desktop, phones or other devices products

  14. 14 Werwolf

It could be nice the fight between gecko-based browsers: Firefox and Netscape. The same technology (xul) , the same rendering angine - Gecko. Netscape with buildin-extensions a nice skin, more functionality out of the box.

  15. 15 Adi

I use it until now. I am more likely to use FireFox these days, but i do not thing we can say RIP :)

    Thanks for image!

  16. 16 Netfox

Netscape isn’t dead. It lives on as Firefox.

    Quoting the troll:

out of all browsers opera is closest to its own nice ‘RIP’ stone

Not likely. More than 100% revenue increase for desktop alone in Q3 2007. Profitable company. Lots of cash. Lots of contracts and customers. Growth all over. Worst case scenario, Opera is bought by some major corporation that wants its own browser.

  17. 17 w2

    100% revenue growth?

look at the absolute numbers, and divide it [~80mln nok total revenue] by number of opera employees [~500]. per-head revenue is very low for a hi-tech company, around 160k NOK per average employee revenue. and it is revenue, not income.

    1 EUR ~ 12 NOK

i dont want to brag, but this is less than i earn doing 40/8 job in Poland, country with rather low salaries.

when you take EBIDTA into account, it gets much worse (about 10 times less, ~8mln nok)

so think harder next time when you bring financials into disscussion, as financial isnt something opera should brag about.

ofc youll never know that, because you never read q3 report ( http://www.opera.com/company/investors/ ) but repeat opera PR statements without giving them deeper thought. that is something common to you, no matter how you decide to sign next time.

“In the Desktop area, strong user growth combined with
higher ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) drove revenue in
the quarter. ” - but somehow data on that user growth is nowhere to be found in the report. but it would make an interesting read, because id like to know methods opera used to obtain such data. in recent history many opera employees stated, that user-base estimation tools are bad, so i’d like to know the right ones.

ps. stock options cost growth IS impressive btw.. 1000%! :)

  18. 18 w2

oops on my side, that is ‘quarterly revenue’ not ‘annual yty revenue’. to obtain very rough estimate of year revenue, multiply it by 4. so, per-employee revenue would be about 3 times higher than what i earn, still, rather low result.

  19. 19 Werwolf

W2 go to spam in another blog.

Since opera exists it has only 2%, but who cares, if it is the best browser on Earth??? :D

NOBODY, cares. I will stay with opera even with 0.125% :D

  20. 20 Steve Barker

Found this version on our Mac, so…..

  21. 21 Steve Barker

…. downloaded version 9 and had a play. Its good, I would rather use it than FireFox. Its a shame its not progressing.

  22. 22 Steve Barker

…but if it identifies itself as FireFox no wonder it does not have a market pressence!

  23. 23 Investor

    ” w2 : (Opera) per-head revenue is very low for a hi-tech company

    Ops ;)

Right, the most important indicator… The reason Netscape got the RIP… 10 years down the alley.

  24. 24 Daniel Goldman

w2, can you please stop your trolling already? I’m growing tired of it already!

  25. 25 Werwolf

    To: Steve Barker

I am not sure, if Netscape identifies itself as Firefox:

    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11pre) Gecko/20071206 Firefox/2.0.0.11 Navigator/9.0.0.5

  26. 26 Kaixi

Oh, it’s so sad. Netscape brings me back so many memories. My dad’s still using it. Netscape 9 is not bad at all.

After reading Netscape’s announcement, I’m worried about Opera and its market share now, I think I’ll promote Opera in my school :-) I’ve already convinced more than 10 of my friends that never heard of Opera to use it!

  27. 27 Mike

A big shame, Netscape 9.0 is a fine web browser.

  28. 28 werwolf

Without Netscape there would not be a Mozilla, SeaMonkey, Firefox, Thunderbird, Flop, K-Meleon

Funny how the troll w2 keeps changing the subject when he’s caught lying. When the fact that Opera’s desktop revenue in Q3 was more than 100%, he tries to spin the numbers to talk about something completely different. He is clearly as ignorant about the stock market as he is about web design and technology, as he doesn’t realize that Opera is a company in rapid growth.

  33. 33 tcchuin

which will be the next…..?opera….safari..or firefox?

  34. 34 yes

Opera Software has been focusing on growth rather than pleasing short-term investors so far. Of course you are going to make less money for each employee when you hire everyone you can get your hands on because you have so much work to do. But once this phase is over the growth in personell will slow down and the profits will soar. Opera Software is already profitable, and revenues grew by more than 50% in Q3 this year. Fewer hires combined with further accelerating revenue growth will lead to pleasing results, just like the management promised.

Opera is a company in rapid growth, so it’s rather silly to pretend that it isn’t and complain about low revenue per employee.

  35. 35 Nafcom

It’s sad to see Nescape gone, I used it as my second browser next to Opera since netscape 4.x
Hopefully somebody else will take over like it happened with Mozila that is now SeaMonkey

  36. 36 veggen

I hanen’t used Netscape since 4.71 because 6.0 was horribly unstable and that’s when I discovered Opera. Still, it was my first browser, so it is a bit sad.

  37. 37 Werwolf

Also basicaly you could copy the old Netscape throbber to SeaMonkey and use the splash screen and the old theme.

  38. 38 Michael

Navagator and Firefox are so similar what is the difference. I stopped using firefox and started
using Navagator again because for some reason Firefox started to shut down on me. If some one knows the reason let me know. mfitzpat03@hotmail.com
