We’ve been seeing a huge increase in our internal usage numbers of the Opera desktop browser. Internal usage statistics show that the Opera desktop browser grew its number of users by about 45% in the last 10 months.

I closely monitor the internal usage numbers on a weekly basis; it has been going up and up. We currently have a record high number of users.

Our goal for the year of 2007 was to grow our number of users by 50%. With the 45% increase, we’re very close to reaching our goal. We’ve got one more month to go; hopefully we’ll surpass our goal for the year.

According to statistics released by NetApplications, Opera grew its browser market share to 1.11% in the month of November, up from 0.87% in September, a 28% increase. (See note about these statistics)

The increase in popularity of the Opera desktop browser is no doubt a result of our many fans promoting and spreading the word of Opera. It’s great that we have such a vibrant and active community of users who go out of their way to tell people about Opera (in blogs, comments, forums, etc). I always enjoy reading blog posts about Opera. Keep it up.

Awesome, over the 1% barrier. Sadly I’m not using it since it looks gastly in OS X (I could make it look better in Tiger, but in Leopard the new Aqua changes make it impossible to have Opera blend in; it’s like running Windows apps in Wine). I’ll always use it on Windows and Linux though.

Oh, I use Safari for my browser lol. I’m posting this in my RSS reader (subscribed to Opera Watch), guess it uses the Netscape engine.

Netscape Navigator 5, now that’s impressive. It never even existed!

The user agent string probably just starts with “Mozilla/5.0″ like many browsers. Doesn’t actually mean it uses any particular engine.

Ah, whatever lol. I don’t like Mozilla and Netscape so I don’t follow their products much and ****.

Just created two charts from HitsLink data that show browsers trends:

On the first chart we can see a stable fall of IE. Yay! And release of IE7 doesn’t really help Microsoft. Also here we clearly see fast growth of Firefox and stable growth of Safari. You can hardly see Opera here in comparison to other 3 browsers, so I created 2nd chart that shows growth of non-IE browsers. ;)

Here we can see that growth of Firefox is fast but not as stable as Safari’s. Netscape and Mozilla suite seems already a history — their small market share is slowly falling, recent releases of Netscape browser seems not help.
Opera hopefully will be “new Netscape of 2004″ in a year with market share of 2% or so — we can see pretty stable growth in last 10-12 months. Opera Mini grows fast and stable, so expect that it may outrun desktop version of Opera in a year or so.

Hey! I forgot that I can’t post pictures here. :(
Here are two links to charts:

I will update charts, so this post will show browsers trends up to date.
I also posted these charts in my blog.

FataL, you’re using the erroneous stats from HitsLink. It’s not only the November stat, but the stats from previous months have also changed. I suggest you wait to update the charts until we sort things out with HitsLink.

I used “good” stats. :) I logged in as you have suggested.

Hmmm… It will take ages until Firefox and the good browsers have 50% of the market. Short of Google coming to the rescue, I can’t see how we’ll get there before like… 2012? A true shame…

how do you get the internal usage statistics?

  11. 11 Daniel Goldman

WildEnte, you gotta join Opera for that. :) From time to time, hoever, we release some usage stats.

  12. 12 WildEnte

I was more referring to “how do you collect those data”. is this the stuff you get through opera:config#UserPrefs|EnableUsageStatistics or through pings from Operas asking if updates are available?

And, while we’re at it, what’s going on with news about Opera for OLPC’s XO for average Joe?

“Short of Google coming to the rescue”

They are already heavily involved. Don’t forget that they even pay people to get people to download Firefox.

Net Applications has changed their methodology for their latest statistics.

Opera mini just dropped from 0.66% to 0.01% and Opera 9.x from 1.11% to 0.64%!!
