Here comes Opera Mobile 9
Published December 10th, 2007 1:37 PM EST By Daniel GoldmanOpera Mobile 9 is heading out the door.
A global mobile phone manufacturer will begin pre-installing Opera Mobile 9 on their Windows Mobile phones sometime during the first half of 2008. In addition, Opera Mobile 9 will be featured on UIQ platform. UIQ is used in mobile phones from Sony Ericsson, Motorola, BenQ and Arima.
In other news, Opera Mobile 8.65 will be pre-installed on the latest Softbank smartphone, the Softbank X01T. This phone, which runs Windows Mobile 6, will be available in Japan.

Awesome i can’t wait
using
Any idea when we will see a general release for existing devices?
using
Great news for UIQ users!!! Daniel, i wonder if this means all the devices from the new Symbian UIQ3.x platform will have access to this??? Right now there are SE W960, W950, P1, P990 and M600, and Motorola Z8…all have Opera 8.65 pre-installed.
Will all those devices, plus the new ones that come later in 2008 (”P5″, z10, etc), have access to Opera 9??? Via firmware upgrade or download??? Thanks
using
ares, depending on the model and OEM, some phones will Opera Mobile 9 and some will have Opera Mobile 8.65.
using
So, all the phones that now have 8.65 won´t be able to access 9??? Because even 8.65 has got alot of updates (new releases) via firmware update process on the devices i mentioned…
There are no new UIQ devices announced so far, only rumors, and their release dates are still (it is said) far away, so Opera 9 should be out before
I trust Opera, UIQ, SE and Motorola will avoid to penalize their users like this…can you get more info on it???
using
SE would avoid to penalize their users? LOL what about the ripped off P990 lemon buyers?
using
What about existing S60 third ed. devices?
using
I’m almost sure that the “global mobile phone manufacturer” is HTC. I’m right?
using
Lots of possibilities. Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Kyocera, etc.
using
“A global mobile phone manufacturer will begin pre-installing Opera Mobile 9 on their Windows Mobile”
So, is a manufacturer that make phones with WinMob. The bigger WinMob manufacturer is HTC [They only sells WinMob devices, when you think about a WinMob phone you renember about HTC]. Maybe it’s Motorola, Samsung or Palm, but i bet on HTC.
using
Thanks for the update. I know quite a few of us in the Pocket PC world have been waiting forever for this.
using
Again, Daniel, it would be nice if the UIQ question is answered…not offering ALL UIQ3 users the possibility to access opera mobile 9 will be just STUPID and will make people angry against Opera, SE, Motorola and UIQ…makes no sense
See opera 8.65…is not pre-instaled on s60 v3 devices but AT LEAST people can access it via download
using
jon, I can’t comment on the part of UIQ. It’s up to UIQ and those OEMs that use UIQ to decide which version of Opera Mobile to choose.
using
Thanks for the news Daniel.
As Evren said, what about S60 devices?
using
David, other than the UIQ platform and this particular Windows Mobile, we haven’t publicly announced anything yet.
using
here here, S60 devices!
using
Daniel, I see, thanks.
using
Opera Mobile 9 hasn’t been really tested, yet ?… thus can’t be ready for a business preinstall ?… So, can we expect a public beta soon, before X-mas ?
using
Can I update my Opera Mobile version 8.6 on my SE M600i into version 9? How much is the cost?
using
Felipe,
That would be fantastic news, as I just bought a T-Mobile Shadow.
using
I have to wonder why the Mobile team is so hush-hush while the Mini and Desktop teams talk openly and provide early builds.
using
It’s Hush-Hush because they are intending to make $$ on the mobile verion. If you release a free Beta version less people will pay for the final release.
I still would like to know when I can buy it for my WM6 Smartphone.
using
@Chris,
Well, at least they should release an exipiring beta… The only reason that is keeping me from buying 8.65 is because Mini is much more usable. I wont buy until 9 get released, and Im sure that it has the same features that Mini has.
using
Hopefully coming in the early part of the first HALF of 2008. That’s not really news, I mean, it’s a whole six month window there. Still, I can’t wait to pirate this new software!
using
you’re going to lose my business.
safari came out 6 months ago, and opera is STILL not out with something comparable.
if you want my business, get opera mobile 9 out ASAP.
else i’ll either get an iPhone, or Android.
seriously, for a company that specializes in browsers, you shouldn’t let apple and google beat you at it
using
I have SE P1i and I’m using Opera Mini 4 instead of preinstalled Opera Mobile 8.65, just because it’s way better … Hopefully 9.0 will make the difference and it will be free to upgrade …
using
no firm release date. i’m tired of waiting.
on to an iphone, and the much superior webkit
using
i agree that the iphone’s browser is far more usable than even opera mini 4, which is the best the pocketpc has to offer. however, that does not change the fact that the iphone is just a shiny new toy that lacks many serious features. even if i were stuck using pocketIE i would never trade my pocketpc for something so limited.
however i still wonder what is the holdup? a fully-capable browser for the pocketpc that is not painful to use is long overdue.. Java ME Opera is nice but it just doesn’t count as a full-fledged browser in my book. Not when i still have to open up PocketIE just to download a file. Not when I cant make it the default browser. Not when I have to close gmail just to open opera because they both use Java. i just hope opera mobile 9 can meet or exceed the usability of opera mini 4 - that might actually justify the wait.
using
the rumours say that samsung’s sgh i900 will have Opera Mobile 9
