Good news for all of you Google fans. We renewed our search deal with Google for another 2 years.

Google is the default search engine in the browser’s integrated search (on the top right corner of the browser).

Here’s a little tidbit for you guys and gals: Opera was the first to include a search field inside of the browser. In addition, Opera was also the first browser company to have such a deal with Google.

as long as it makes money for Opera i’m happy!

    Good to hear!

(Would love to see an Opera search deal with Ask.com, as well. It seems to be an interesting search site these days…and would like to keep helping Opera with search revenue.)

What about Opera Mini? At least the current beta version allows you to add your own search engines, so I got Google back that way, but will Google be back as the default search for it anymore? (hey, it was missing compeltely by default!)

I don’t really care about the default search engine for desktop browser as I always use the address bar by prefixing the word with ‘g’ to use Google, and that I have deleted all the extra search engines anyway, and added some custom ones.

I am happy knowing the Opera for desktop will be profitable at least for the next two years… Enought for having Opera 11 here!

This “first” stuff is getting old and annoying.

Well, Yahoo became Exclusive Global Partner for Mobile Search in January this year. I don’t know when that contract expires, but until then Yahoo will be the search for Opera Mobile and Opera Mini.

Ehh. That google search by default has always annoyed me to no end. My first move on a fresh Opera install is to replace it with altavista/remove it alltogether.

Mine too, Tailz. Mine too. Google worries me – deeply.

And I think smaller companies show a little more discretion and dignity when latching on to one of the web-monsters’ revenue-teats, instead of parading the Google brand around on their websites.

Not all of what Google does/wants/dreams is welcomed by everyone who uses this fine browser.

How much did Google have to pay?

I have one question then: When I open an empty tab I get a search field on top of the speed dial and this is Yahoo! search. So Opera seems to have some kind of agreement with Yahoo! too?

  12. 12 Daniel Goldman

musiKk, the Google search deal is only for the default search in the integrated search field and the URL address bar. For the default search on the Speed Dial page, however, we have a deal with Yahoo to provide the search.

  13. 13 XP1

Yes, musiKk. It is also possible to change the default Speed Dial search provider.

Go to Tools > Preferences (CTRL+F12) > Search Tab > Select a Search Provider from the list > Click Edit > Expand Details >> > Select “Use Speed Dial Search Engine” > OK > OK

  14. 14 musiKk

Ah, I see. And thanks for the information XP1 but Yahoo is fine, I have been using it for years now, so it’s alright. :)

Great for Opera and the google fans.. but I don’t like the big G :P

This is all nice and beautiful but when will Opera and Google work together on the Google sites compatibility for all modern browsers out there?

Pop “Censorship By Google” into Wikipedia, and find an interesting article.

Whilst, unlike some, I do not actively boycot Google, I just tend not to use it!

Mainly use exalead.com (which I have on my address bar), but do use Yahoo on the speed dail if I do not find what I am looking for.

  18. 18 James Cassell

Great! — anything to keep Opera getting money and the browser free.

  19. 19 Philry4n

For mini 4. i just add Google,Clusty whatever to 2nd place of the search engines. If it’s G i use the desktop search string :)

  20. 20 netster007x

Man. I like Yahoo! Whatever, nothing stops me from just switching the default.

  21. 21 censorship

Steve_Barker, what is that Wikipedia article supposed to show? That Google is forced to follow the law of countries it wishes to operate in?

You think Yahoo is better than Google in this regard?

And what about Exalead? Do they actually refuse to follow the law?

  22. 22 Steve Barker

The point is that increasingly the web is where information is gained from. Search engines can limmit or expand that pool of resources. Most people do not get past the first few “answers”, even if a diverse range of links is offered.

Some of the examples in the Wiki article lead one to believe that Google is right to limit searches, whilst other not.

Google controls over 50% of the search market, therefore controling Google – especially if that percentage increases – means that you have control of what the majority of surfers read.

Hence, I believe a diverse range of search engines are nessascary so as to increase the potential pool of information, and making commercial/government control harder.

I tend to believe diversity is good, hence I use Linux and Opera rather than stick with the market controlers.

PS If Google had a monopoly, will all searches be sponsored?

  23. 23 Diego

Does Yahoo, Altavista and exalead hive off users private data the same was as google? and would they be more or less inclined to hand over the data to governments when asked to than google?

  24. 24 pleh

“Does Yahoo, Altavista and exalead hive off users private data the same was as google?”

In what way does Google do it?

  25. 25 Dante

Let me be the first to welcome our n re-welcome our search masters.

I guess Opera is payed every time it gets used. But it is much more convenient to use the address bar for search. I guess the only difference is the URL that is used if you search with the search with the integrated search. Does anyone know the URL so we can use it for the address bar search too, or would that go against the agreement to use it that way?

    Daniel Aleksandersen,

~80% of each click for the average partners, not sure about Opera, probably more.

but on kestrel this bar is definated

Any chance Google will start supporting/testing in Opera now?

  30. 30 blaberus

    But why not Live.com? ;)

  31. 31 XP1

blaberus, Google.com indexes more pages than Live.com.

  32. 32 blaberus

XP1, I see but it would be funny.

  33. 33 BAMAToNE

All this Google hate baffles me. Google has the best search engine, hands down. I’m glad it’s the default.

  34. 34 Daniel Goldman

BAMAToNE, it’s funny also that when we changed the default search engine on Opera Mini from Google to Yahoo, everyone was in arms about it. Now all of a sudden, it’s the other way around. :)

  35. 35 kftgr

more Google support of Opera in its pages, please :(
