Opera tip: Quickly close a tab by middle-clicking it
Published September 17th, 2007 4:50 PM EDT By Daniel GoldmanHere’s a tip many of you are probably already aware of; however it’s such a useful one, that it’s worth repeating for the newcomers.
Close a tab
To close a tab, simply middle-click (with the mouse wheel) on the tab.

Retrieve a closed tab
All closed tabs in Opera end up in the trash can (located on the right-end of the Tab bar). To reopen a closed tab, click on the trash can icon and click on the webpage you want to reopen.

Prevent accidental closing of tabs
Read our previous tip to learn how you could prevent from closing a tab accidentally.

using
is there a ‘powerbutton’ version of the trashcan, that would
a., restore the closed window/tab on click
b., show the trashcan menu only when clicking on the arrow?
i think i had something like that a long time ago, but it got lost somehow :/
using
csulok, I’m not exactly sure what you mean. Are you looking for an option to only show the arrow, but not the trash can icon?
using
I’ve set up a mouse gesture to reopen accidentally closed tabs.
Since the mouse gesture for close page is down+right, i’ve setup the gesture for “reopen page” to down+left. This also nicely follows the analogy of gesture left for back and gesture right for forward.
using
@dan: no, i’m looking for an advanced trashcan button, that behaves differently:
when i click on different parts of it. when clicking on the actual trashcan it would restore the last closed window without showing any menu.
when i click on the arrow part of the button, it behaves like the default trashcan button, as in it shows the trash context menu where one can choose which closed object to restore.
using
maybe you’re looking for this?
http://operawiki.info/CustomButtons
find the “reopen closed page” buttons.
using
While on the subject of tabs, is there a way to stop opera from reloading allready open tabs every time i start opera itsself?
using
csulok, as Dane mentioned, you may want to try creating a custom button.
using
thanks for tip on opening closed tabs….very handy
using
thanks.
as a multi year user the middle click is a true discovery: not only close tabs, but also open links in background.
another recent discovery of mine: double clicking (left mouse button) next to a tab in the tab bar opens a new tab/speed dial page.
using
vd2k, even easier, you could middle click the tab bar to open a new tab/speed dial.
using
If you enjoy middle clicking or a gesture to quickly get rid of tabs, why not save space on the tab itself by removing the now unnecessary little close button and uncheck “Show Close button on each tab” to be found at Tool-Preferences-Advance-Tabs
using
Spitfire,
Tools->Preferences or Ctrl+F12,
The “General” tab
Where it says “Startup”, change from “Continue from last” to whatever other option you prefer.
using
Daniel, even more fun, your tip works different when there is text in memory (ctrl+c). middle clicking the tab bar with text in memory results in opening a new tab with a url similar to http:/// or it uses the internal search engines, e.g. “a mouse” links to answers.com.
