How to quickly load webages in Opera using nicknames?
Published September 11th, 2007 4:52 PM EDT By Daniel GoldmanOpera gives you the option to assign a nickname to a webpage, which you can then use to quickly load that page.
Step 1:
Begin by bookmarking the page. In the menu bar, go to Bookmarks > Bookmark page… The bookmark dialog will open.
Step 2:
Click on the ‘Details’ button.

Step 3:
Enter a short nickname. Click OK. You’re done.

To see how it works:
Enter the nickname in the URL address bar and press the ‘Enter’ button.

Little trick:
If you press SHIFT+F2, Opera will load the bookmarked page immediately as soon as you have typed in enough of a nickname to differentiate it from the others. For example, if you have a nickname ‘om’ and you don’t have any other nicks starting with the letter ‘o’, then Opera will immediately load the ‘om’ bookmark when you enter ‘o’. Pretty cool.

Neat. I’ve been using keyword searches to do this for a long time, eg write “g asdf” to go to google.

Hey Daniel: I thought one of the readers (forget which now… GT500?) was going to make you some transparent browser icons for the comments section. What happened?
using
also works for folders, allowing to open more than one bookmark with one nickname
using
OpenDNS allows you to use shortcuts like this, except they work on every computer in your network, regardless of the browser you use.
using
BAMAToNE, yes. I got the transparent images, but got busy with other things and never got around to it.

I’ve been using nicknames for a while, but never knew about the shift+F2 trick. Thanks!
using
Is it possible to put the nicknames in the speed dial?
using
Tesla, try changing Shift+F2 to F1 in your keyboard configuration. It really rocks then.
using
Nicknames also works with the command line, to open individual bookmark or all bokmarks included in a nicknamed folder:
for windows:
>opera.exe nickname
In first v9.x, nickname was enabled in preference startup homepage field, but now, unfortunately, it’s converted to http://nickname

I’ve been using the Shift+F2 trick for years. In fact I started using it so much that I also started using F2 instead of the address bar and now I don’t even have the address bar visible at all; although it freaks out anyone else who tries to use my computer to visit a site.
@Michael Mc: I didn’t know OpenDNS offers that now…just did a bit of reading turns out they offer basically something similar to Opera’s Custom Search and Bookmark Nicknames. I think having the same searches/nicknames across a network would be not as good (i.e. someone may want wikipedia as wp while another may want washington post as wp), also some searches/bookmarks maybe shouldn’t be so easily accessed.
@Kai: not currently, would be a good idea though.

This is the stuff that makes Opera THE FASTEST MOTHERF@#$N’ BROWSER.
using
This is a function I was waiting for the last year, since I began to use the search abbreviations.
Thank you Opera Team. Keep up the good work.

Is there a way to see all the different nicknames one once set? Because I (as probably most people) have quite some bookmarks and I wouldn’t want to lose track of the nicknames.
using
musiKk, if you open the bookmarks tab, you’ll see a list of nicknames. Go to Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks…
using
Wow, that was fast. Thanks a lot. Now I’ll give them nicknames a try.
using
great! One more reason to love Opera
BTW: is there some eastern eggs in kestrel?
using
Easter egg in Opera 9.5? Well, you still have the slashdot one.
using
@Kal Hit the speed dial number in address bar and hit enter.
using
alias also work in the bookmark folders, that way you can create a folder with the pages you read a lot and open all of them with just one shortcut
using
andol, I second that! I’ve mapped F1 to nicknames since …forever and its the first customization I do when installing a new Opera. Who needs F1 for help anyway?
