Opera Tip: How to quickly move up one directory/folder level in the URL?

Favorite Browser, for me it’s pretty easy using your thumb to press on the CTRL key and your middle finger on the Backspace key.
Having said that, like almost all other Opera keyboard shortcuts, you could change them. Go to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Shortcuts > Keyboard setup > Edit… (Search for ‘Parent directory’)

For Mac users it’s obviously Apple+Backspace (just pointing out the keyboard difference).

In safari you right-click on the pages title. Unfortunately there is no shortcut for that in Safari.

I’m a mouse kinda person. Hold the right click button, drag your mouse up and to the left, and release the right click button. That’ll also get you up one directory.

There are so many times after switching back to FF that I have tried that, or had the need to do the equivalent of Ctrl+Backspace and couldn’t…

Ctrl+Shift+Backspace is used to go to the homepage … but only if the “home” link exists.
I haven’t found any other way to reach the root diretory of a site through a shortcut

I just stumbled upon this shortcut few days ago as it is shown in the tooltip of one of my custom buttons doing the same. Also I discover something new and useful from time to time in Opera - besides the really new stuff.

Another nifty Opera feature is going full screen when viewing a single image in an image gallery, and clicking Shift+X (try it out in Google Images, after clicking a single image).

Speaking of tips and tricks, it would be nice if there was a place in the My.Opera Community just for them. Maybe merge some of the documents from the Opera Wiki and allow people to vote on what they like the most?

That feature is broken, though…
If you’re on http://example.com/somedir/somescript?param1=a/b¶m2=something it won’t take you to http://example.com/somedir/ but to http://example.com/somedir/somescript?param1=a/ which is most likely not what you want.
If I understand RFC2396 (Section 2.2) correctly the / only has to be encoded as %2F if it would “conflict with their reserved purpose”, which it doesn’t in this case. I filed a bug report a long time ago, but it got ignored. Oh well.

I tried using the Shift+X feature above and it worked at first but when I left the site and went back and tried it on any other directory it quit working.. bug? or am I doing something wrong?

To the person who mentioned the mouse gesture (figure 7 starting from the bottom); this is my third most commonly used mouse gesture, out of any of them. And it’s a very cool feature that is obscure in all the other browsers. It’s super easy to pull off.

This feature seems to have lost some power. In the past you could hit Ctrl+Backspace twice in order to move up 2 directory levels. Now you have to wait until the first directory has loaded before using Ctrl+Backspace the second time.
