I have just tried the Safari for Windows and on first impression, it does seem to be faster than my Opera 9.21. However, Opera is also my e-mail client as well as feed aggregator, so I wonder if that had any effect on the performance. Any ideas?
To all that say speed is not important, try saying that when you have a 64Kbps connection (posing as broadband). Some of the comments by Opera users seem to be just like the Firefox users when they came to confront the fact that Opera was faster. Opera has to improve its speed now , period, . As for me, I will still stick to Opera, it is my all-in-one after all, and strange as it may sound, I have a soft corner for what should be an abstract lifeless bit of software. I also have enough faith that Opera will make a good fight out of it as far as speed is concerned.

I installed a safari today. It was not 'installable' 2 days ago, until i find the solution where you have tu register some dll onto the system... btw, i'm running on Vista now...

After i manage to install it correctly, i start up safari and guess what, nothing appear at the menu.. there seems to be some text/font problems.. really annoyed with this... googling the net led me to several steps on fixing this. Some of them resolve the invisible text on the menu but still, my Yahoo page does not render correctly and still, text are missing...

And i came to my own conclusion, Safari maybe good on Mac, but on Windows, sorry, Safari does sucks a lot... and yet, Opera still the best...

regards..

Safari for windows (WinXP English) seems to crash if the system doesn't meet the system requirements of 500MHz and 256MB of ram. (maybe it's actually another problem though.)

Since it's a beta, it might be too early to tell if it'll ever run on a system below the requirements.

All other windows browsers (including Swift) don't have that problem, so this could spell trouble for Safari.

As suggested in some of the comments on this page, the launch of Safari for Windows could be useful for website developers on Windows platforms, who should now be able to test how their sites look in Safari without having to access a Mac.

Unfortunately, we are still far from this situation. The current Safari for Windows fails to render a large porcentage of pages in a sensible way, even pages whose code validates according to 3W web standards.

Beware: Safari for Mac and Safari for Windows DO NOT show web pages in the same way.

<blockquote>I think Opera is doomed, now…</blockquote>
Agreed. All Opera users are going to run off to the featureless Safari overnight. And it doesn't matter that most of Opera's revenues are from non-PC devices like mobile phones, set top boxes, game consoles, media players, etc.

Yawn. I wonder why the benchmarks were using the beta on windows, instead of the final product on a mac. I wonder when they complete porting all the engine features to Safari/win how much slower the final will be.

Hey! It's that Jobs reality distortion field again!

MX: You're an ass talker. There is no way that Windows XP is more secure than Mac OS X. Mac OS X has one known worm which you'd have to be a complete and utter moron to get (literally, you have to manually do many things after downloading the file, it won't auto-activate) and Trojans still effect it. No virus', however, effect Mac OS X. They exist, but don't harm it and that's what Apple says.

As for OS X being the fastest, I've never heard that. It's merely performance. Ever wonder why Apple focuses on one CPU type (currently Intel)? It's because they want to work with the manufacturer to not only design the motherboard to be perfect for it, but to also create drivers that maximize everything. That's why a Mac OS X machine with the same specs as a Windows machine will perform 10 times better than the Windows machine (I'm talking different boxes though, not boot camp; Apple ports their Intel drivers so that Windows then runs perfect on the motherboard and such, these drivers wouldn't work on a normal windows machine). The reason for this is because not only do Dell and the like use a basic mother board, but Microsoft makes generic CPU drivers so they work on everything, which means that it won't make full use of the CPU it's using.

As for the most advanced OS in the world, I'd believe that, especially after Leopard's new features. Windows is one of the most primitive OSs out there, then Linux which is obviously far superior to Windows and then Mac OS X because it's the only OS that can run applications from every other OS either natively or through parallels or something (not VM ware, that's different).

So, as I said, you're an ass talker, you say things without fully comprehending everything you're saying. No cruddy Windows machine will be better than a Macintosh machine unless the Windows OS is running on the Macintosh as well.

Most of the comments here are related to the "speed issues". I believe that it is a clear strategy to port the browser for a wider audience and supposedly "web standards" on Apple's iPhone. Where else they would the "web development" for "free"? Having a browser on the "most dominant platform" and given the "buzz" about anything Apple, I am sure they have played it on here. Apple's Internet initiatives are clearly playing out here.

I feel that they are not looking at the larger desktop share but instead would want to focus on the mobile market. For that, they needed a browser that works on Windows so that everyone doesn't have to purchase a Mac. I may be mistaken but this seems to be my view.

Further, why would Apple release something as buggy as described here? I haven't used Safari on Windows and would perhaps never would.

Why does Jobs have everything around himself described as "iconic"?

Apple's fortunes are centred on hardware and for the same reason they need to sequentially upgrade the hardware at a premium. For all that, they need to create a buzz. This cannot be sustained for long, for obvious reasons and hence they are looking at this market for media and mobile Internet.

Just more bullshit from crApple. They lie about everything.
Look up the facts and you actually see that Steve Jobs talks utter crap.
For example, Apple tells you OS X is secure. It isn't. There are plenty of articles around that discuss the myriad security problems in OS X - you just need to look. In fact, OS X, percentage-wise, has far more serious security bugs than Linux or Windows XP. That's a fact, look it up.
And Apple tells you OS X is fast. Meanwhile, independent parties load Linux on the same hardware and find it to be much faster. They load Windows on the same hardware and find it much faster. That's why there are more Linux servers and Windows servers around than Apple servers.
Most advanced OS in the world, complete poppycock.
Apple tells you a lot of things. Don't believe a word of it.
I wouldn't install Safari(Let alone actually use it instead of Opera) if they paid me.
I am surprised Opera users are not more angry about their lies regarding Opera.

CSS 3 support is pretty amazing in Safari though :O

But Safari isn't any good for advanded computer users. It's perfect for Sundaysurfers (nice word) or Grandmas, so it might indeed take a lot of % of Browser usage, though IE 7 has quite OK UI now also.

Opera still rules the house, specially if Kestrel comes and new CSS stuff will be added.

BTW Safari is much, much faster with multilevel CSS menu, which depends on :hover pseudoclass. Opera is even slower than IE 7 actually in that...
