yes, they may have a good business model, but I think they are getting too overconfident...

I think most are actually going straight past it, they have already set their bookmarks to focus on Blogs, social sites and all the other stuff... :p

<i>"Who are you to tell Opera what is the most important, Garth?"</i>

Huh?. It's not about who I am nor what I consider important, dude; it's quite obvious that the browser section is the most important part of the Opera website, unless they want to change the business model and focus on Blogs, social sites and all that stuff and ditch the browser altogether...

Well said, Garth. Many people matriculate to the forums complaining that the skins, settings, toolbars, etc. they tried to upload don't show up.

Another sad fact is that one of Opera's main bastions of functionality, userjs, is pretty much ignored like the plague except for one dedicated forum. It's left up to us, the Opera users, to create a totally separate web site just for userjs and customizations.

Userjs.org exists for that purpose, but it is now defunct. GT500 is in the process of creating a new site that will feature more than userjs, but it's a slow process. (He's doing this on his own time.)

(More info here: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=175588 )

Now, all that aside, I'm very happy to hear about the community statistics. :D

Garth, I'm with you! :)

As for Nielson/NetRatings sniffering practice -- they sniff only on home page. Any other page is accessible. Also along with Opera they blocks iCab. It's a very stupid practice...

Garth, we are working on updating the 'Opera browser' section on My Opera, though I'm not sure about the ETA for the changes. You're right it needs a ton of work.

no problems here with 'Nielson/NetRatings'(win98, ID as opera!) ...
But as for how a 'non-business' guy would use the site??

yes, Tamil's page is good, but it is a bit like measuring people using a supermarket - no definition whether they are a stranger buying a sandwich, or a local doing their weekly shop...

If it could be split into 'my.forum' for the chat, and 'my.opera.forum' for the browser, a clearer picture could be seen...

and amongst all these sign-ups, how many bother to fill in the 'personal info' ????

That's nice and all but my.opera fails where it shouldn't: <strong>Opera Browser</strong>. The setups, menus, etc pages are a joke, no one from Opera cares about that section at all and users are not encouraged to share their setups, tips and so on; the most important part of my.opera is doomed.

Why not put some effort in encouraging users to share their knowledge about Opera via a proper section or is it just that the only thing that Opera cares about is the widgets section and the frikin' blogs?.

For some strange reason Opera hides everything important (the browser itself) on my.opera, meanwhile users have to create their own sites or post it in the forum/labyrinth in order to share something; well, just another weird management decision by Opera and counting...

Jorg, that's odd. I wonder why they would block Opera. When I tried accessing the site, I thought it was down or something, it didn't occur to me that they would use a 403 error code for such a silly reason.

Nielson/NetRatings does not even allow a browser with Opera user agent string to enter its homepage ("403 Forbidden") :( - so it's not surprising me that they ignore My Opera as a social site
