[Important Update] Nintendo confirms Flash support for US Nintendo DS browser release
Published May 22nd, 2007 11:56 AM EDT By Daniel GoldmanImportant Update: Oops… It looks like I jumped the gun. Having seen this on Nintendo’s website, I assumed it was legitimate and correct. After being alerted to the possibility that this may be a mistake, I checked with a person familiar with the DS browser developments at Opera, and was told that to our knowledge the DS browser does not support Flash.
The rumors are true. On its website, Nintendo confirmed that the US version of the Opera-powered DS browser will include support for Flash and JavaScript. The browser is scheduled to be released on June 4th.
Say hello to YouTube on the DS browser.

so where do I send my european Opera to get the full-flavored one? If there’s no way for us who already payed for the light version to get one with all features … I’m very upset!
using
What the…? Now I’m really upset. Stupid Europeans who are just good enough for a “light” version at a higher price, eh? Nintendo, this is bad. Really. Maybe it’s even faster than the European and Japanese version and I was used as a beta tester. Now that sounds great.
They should release the better DS browser in Europe at least. I don’t think I’ll be able to exchange the “light” version with the full version, though.
And because I bet we’ll have to pay 40 euros where Americans pay 40 dollars it’ll be the best to import the browser.
using
Well, the really good news would be if the browser in itself has been speeded up - or rather that data transfer rates has been speeded up. Since they bothered putting Flash support in the browser I expect other improvements as well.
And anyway - the americans have been waiting a while for this. No need for the rest of the world to be grumpy now, is it?

Hold on, you in your function as a technology evangelist for Opera checked the Nintendo website, instead of just asking your direct colleagues?
using
Remco, this article must’ve been quickposted from all the excitement.
using
XP1, that’s what I expect as well, but I’m sure I’m not the only one that expects that Opera’s own people know what they’re talking about.
Besides, IGN reported already in 2006 that the DS would most definitely not have Flash support. Something they found on the Japanese Nintendo DS page.
So has Opera contacted Nintendo yet to get them to remove the false claims from the website?
using
Remco, they haven’t changed it yet, so either no, they haven’t, or Nintendo is just really really slow.
using
I just sent an e-mail to Nintendo requesting a definitive answer on the implementation of Flash.
Hopefully we’ll have something soon.

It’s a shame Flash isn’t supported.
But seeing as how the system can hold a favourites page, it should theoretically be possible to download a compatible Flash player, even though in all probability it’s more a dream than reality.
A big shame Nintendo didn’t allow for anything like an SD slot for such downloads, or use some of the empty space within the expansion cartridge for said capabilities - imagine YouTube on the small screen…
using
Well, at least we can read text and view images on this thing. That’s what we should be thankful for. But they really should create a better version with flash, I was so dissapointed when it didn’t work. Oh well…
using
Actually, it DOES support Flash and Javascript:

W00t!

Can somebody with the product please confirm this so we can put the hearsay and rumors to rest? The Nintendo website is not a reliable source.
using
Sadly, it’s true. The DS Browser relased on June 5, 2007 in the US (DS Lite version) does NOT support Flash. I bought it on release day.
Also, from what I can tell, it doesn’t support JavaScript either (it’s not rendering the doppler radar loops from the National Weather Service web site, which use JS).
Very disappointing, Nintendo and Opera. Not only did you fail to include these key web browsing features, but you falsely advertised them by posting an incorrect features list on your official site. Booo!

i just got back from EB, where the guy let me look through the manual. in the faq in the back it says that it does not support flash.

Total bummer I had seen this blog before the non flash confirmation. Was plannning on copping a DSLITE and opera on my way home from work tongiht. :(( close to balling. Not really but very upset. I was about to be saying screwa a pocket PC I got my DS with opera, well guess I gotta save more for a good pocket pc now.

hey everyone i think i have a good idea to get the flash support for the nintendo ds browser. why dont they make some kind of download site for the nintendo ds browser? we could get the flash support that way!
using
Is there any way to download ANYTHING to DS browser?
using
I enjoy my DS browser (too many nerds here, too few computers) but I really wish Flash could somehow have been worked in (memory’s not THAT expensive these days). That said, I still find it the most intuitive and web-capable small screen browser I have used. =)
using
why doesnt Nintendo just make a GBA game card with up laodable Flash and JavaScript and also put a little memory in it too i mean how hard could it be? that way we can have Flash and JS, maybe sell it @ a price of $15-$20.

Because the Opera DS Browser has now all been completed and shipped. Its only been designed to use the slot-2 RAM expansion pack. Plus it isn’t upgradeable. We’ll have to wait for a Version 2 of the browser, if there ever will be one.
