when checked, using edit->find or ctrl+f will autiomatically select “inline find” so you can just start typing to search, as in FF.

Since you’re typing anyway, an alternative is / or . to in-line find text and , to in-line find links.

One BUG that I’m still waiting for Opera to fix though, is for search to disregard line-wrapping.

to jump to that in opera, just double-click on the following text, right click and select ‘goto URL’

there is an even cooler ability in Opera!!

- you can use opera to acess those settings **directly** via a URL !! (If my href works.. :\ )

For me, the two coolest settings in opera:config are:

opera:config#UserPrefs|UseIntegratedSearch

when checked, using edit->find or ctrl+f will autiomatically select “inline find” so you can just start typing to search, as in FF.

It is ridiculous that this was actually taken out of the settings UI since 9.0. This search method is way more powerful than the default search dialog.

The other setting is:
opera:config#UserPrefs|AlternativePageCycleMode

setting this to 0 makes page cycling with ctrl+tab or RMB and mouse wheel in a page order that goes to a parent or child tab of the current tab and not just left or right. I also set page cycle to not show the list so the cycling is instantaneous (you set this in tools->preferences->advanced->tabs->cycle pages without showing list

The thing is, Opera made opera:config to make advanced settings easy. Why unnecessarily struggle through ini-editing when you can make the process much easier in a more graphical approach. The best three advantages of opera:config is it’s easy to tell someone what entry to change, you don’t have to go searching through multiple .ini files to find the preference that you want, and you don’t have to restart your browser [usually] to have the new settings take effect.

I’d like to see a few entries to modify which unleash some cool, little-known feature about Opera, right from opera:config. Could you hunt down some of those, Daniel, and report on them?

Christian, since Opera has so many customizable options, I think that even the advanced Opera users don’t know all of customizable options. I thought it would be nice to occasionally mention some of the Opera features and tips.

Reading the title I thought you would post some nice ideas about editing ini files with Opera Actions - Opera:config seems to be much too easy to be called advanced settings in my terms of speaking. Stay tuned as I'm about to write a post in my OperaBook about Advanced Opera Skinning with Ultimate Customizing Examples (from WebDevSetup via Munnin and Twelve towards a real IE7-clone setup). Of course you are perfectly right with your definition of advanced settings for average or even new Opera users.
