‘Slashdot’ Easter egg in the Opera browser
Published March 5th, 2007 11:37 AM EST By Daniel GoldmanWhen I visited Opera’s headquarters last week, David Storey mentioned to me an Easter egg in Opera that I hadn’t been aware of previously. (Software-based Easter eggs are hidden, undocumented features or messages in applications)
It turns out that this Slashdot Easter egg has been in Opera for a quite while already. If you type the “slash” and “dot” symbols in the URL bar (i.e. “/.”) and hit enter, it will forward to Slashdot’s website.
Try it yourself.

Step 1: Type the “slash” and “dot” symbols

Step 2: Hit enter; redirects to Slashdot

Gah, sekret information!
using
LOL
using
and //. redirect to opera:drives
using
Yes, but does it run Linux?
using
Step 1: Add /. easter egg in Opera browser
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit!
Seriously though, cool! And here I’d been using my “sd” shortcut like a sucker.
using
Pierre: Thanks! You learn something new every day!
using
That’s cool.
I recently discovered a keyboard shortcut I wasn’t aware of, for a feature I wasn’t aware of. When you press the period (”.”) key, it pops up a little “Find in page” search, and it will find anything you type in. I’m used to the field I always put in the toolbar, but I don’t remember anything about this popup thing…
using
GT500: That’s a well documented feature, but nice indeed
using
This finding need to be slashdotted!
using
Pierre, nice find that //. redirects to opera:drives. I discovered // (without dot) does the same.
using
Been using that /. for a while
using
I, for one, welcome our new Operatic overlords.
using
That’s kinda neat.
using
It works also on the Wii browser!
using
Doesn’t work in Opera for Windows Mobile.
using
It’d make me laugh to see some Firefox fanboy write an entire extension just so they could get this feature in their favorite browser, too.
I decided to try this out in Firefox.. I figured they might have it. It just spun its wheels. “I’m sorry, I’m trying to look up http://www…. but I just fail. Here, enjoy my 404 page.”
using
GT500 thanks for the find in page shortcut.
using
I suggest adding “♫” for opera.com
using
nice!i like it:D Are they any more ?
using
@IceArdor: Yeah, that would be funny, considering that you don’t need an extension to make it work in Firefox. Opera isn’t the only browser that lets you assign a nickname to a bookmark (only Firefox calls it a keyword).
using
That’s fine. Are there more eastereggs in Opera?
using
Uuh. I thought Opera just searched Google when you typed something random into the address bar.
Anyone who can confirm that this is hardcoded into Opera?
using
I no longer need to manuelly enter slashdot.org into my browser.
I never really use bookmarks anyways, never manage to get around to transfering them around to my other computers anyways. Thanks to opera for doing it for me.
using
@Svip: Try a Google search for “/.” — it won’t come up with anything. That pretty much confirms that it’s being handled as a special case and not a search.
using
Opera never seases to amaze me. Greatest browser ever.
Opera runs great on a Zaurus SL-5500 running OpenZaurus!
