Reaction to Deepfish, Microsoft’s new Mobile Browser, from Om Malik

Late last night I blogged about the new mobile browser from Microsoft, called Deepfish. I haven’t yet had a chance to give it a test run, since I don’t own a Windows Mobile phone. Have any of you played around with it already?
Here is what the great Om Malik, one of the top tech bloggers, had to say about Deepfish:
If you enjoyed this post, then make sure you subscribe to my RSS Feed.“For now Deepfish, Minimo and all comers are chasing Opera which is a mobile heavyweight. Microsoft’s Deepfish has some of the same features that are already available on Opera’s browser for Windows Mobile devices. (Opera is available for other platforms as well.)
The Deepfish announcement should be juxtaposed with Opera’s recent wins at some of the major Windows Mobile handset makers. Opera’s presence in their own backyard must be worrying the Barons of Redmond.”

I love how this demonstration video ends up showing articles about Opera all the time. Does Opera have a mole at Microsoft?

I went to download the technical preview and got this: “Thank you for your interest in Deepfish; At this time the tech preview has reached the limit of initially available installations. We will send you a notification if we make additional spots available at a later date.”

What a lovely opportunity for Opera to present a demo of the Shark… Mobile 9… Let the public know how a real browser works… make Deepfish jump back into its glassbowl…

Alas, I’m “stuck” with Opera; for I have an inferior Windows Mobile 2003 edition device.

Does the current Opera browser support the SVG foreignObject tag?? With this tag implemented, it would seem to me that a replication of the zooming capability of DeepFish could be readily achieved by Opera. (and firefox 3).Well, maybe not very readily. Would need some XSLT work to produce xhtml to place inside an SVG doc.

@Geoffrey Bays: Opera is going to use the engine from Opera9 on mobile phones and if I stand correctly with the zoom from Opera WII

Geoffrey, Opera has been doing proper zooming for years. I don’t quite see what’s so great about Deepfish’s method of taking a screenshot of the page and just showing the image on the phone.
