I like the start bar very much, i don't want to give it up, but the new speed dial ideea is nice too.
They could leave both features in, after all, the StartBar is usefull even when you're already on a webpage (not just when opening a new webpage).

This is my 2 cents :-)

The trend I detect is that no one uses the vanilla Start Bar. Those that like it use a lot of customizations. Could the problem be that the default Start Bar configuration?

With the Start Bar being more of a Power User feature, it should be disabled by default.

I'm of the minimalist camp and have only two toolbars showing in the UI (both at bottom):
 tab bar
 status bar

Navigation and display are primarily done through mouse gestures, right-click pops, and/or keyboard shortcuts. Kudos to Opera for making so much available to the shortcuts.

The status bar becomes a real status bar with at-a-glance things:
 fit-to-width
 cached/show/no image button
 author/user mode button
 enable/disable plugins button
 Status Field
 Address Field + Go
 "Identify As" clickable text

The tab bar has an added Zoom field.

The Start Bar is separated into three rows with the Wrapper; each row divided into left and right portions using the Dynamic Spacer. I actually only use the first 2 rows, with the third being navigation buttons for my wife in case she has to use Opera real quick.

Never use it. Really gave it a shot for a month after it was first added. Tried to like it. Wanted to like it. No dice.

Personal bar holds my top dozen sites and address bar handles URLs and searches [who needs a separate search field? Opera spoils us :-)].

Even so, I agree 100% that the Start Menu should not be removed completely. Disabled by default would be fine (first thing I do is shut it off on a new install), but the Opera way has always been about OPTIONS. If you want it, it's there.

I use it regularly, and though there is room for improvement, I think it is great. The personal bar gets fairly full if you put all of your most used links there, and sometimes I just like to turn mine off for the real estate to see more web page (same reason I keep my main bar off).

The links I have to have handy, plus the top ten button, are in my start bar. I don't use home much since searches have been integrated into the address bar.

I DO use Start Bar. My choice for it is Top 10, Bookmarks and a couple of routinely accessed sites. I prefer to hide Menu and Personal bar.

I agree, Start Bar is not the cutest thing visually, but it's much more flexible comparing to Speed Dial. And i'd rather not load 9 pages every time i open new tab.

Please, bring Start Bar back!

I like it. It works well. And I do use it - if I'm using the mouse, then it's usually just those few pixels nearer - and therefore more convenient - to go to the bookmarks on the Start bar than it is to go to the actual bookmarks menu.

I also don't think it's clutter. It's one of the most impressive parts of UI design Opera have come up with - it appears only momentarily, and only when you're doing something related to its purpose (typing/selecting a URL). It is, I think, elegant and worthwhile. And if you turn it off by default, I'll probably turn it on as the first thing I do with a new Opera install.

I don't use the startbar. But I have a moderately customized layout (and slightly different on each machine I use :( ). I use search shortcuts and bookmark nicknames. But I'm very much a command line junkie, so it's more natural for me.

But as several have said, repeatedly, I don't think Opera should remove features, even those I don't use, but I'm sure there's someone else who does use it. I know I would be upset if my favorite feature (can't put my finger on it right now... too many) was removed.
