Amit Agarwal, from the Digital Inspiration blog, discovered a hidden feature in Gmail that only works in the Opera browser.

When Google first released Gmail, it was notorious for not including a “delete” button to delete emails. It has since been added (more than 2 years later), however there’s still no keyboard shortcut to delete an email – that is unless you use the Opera browser.

If you hit the “End” key on your keyboard, it deletes the email. This Gmail delete keyboard shortcut doesn’t work in Internet Explorer (IE) or Firefox. Hey, it’s nice to see Google do something for Opera users first – for a change.

As Amit already pointed out, I don’t know why Google didn’t just use the “Delete” button on the keyboard for deleting emails – it makes more sense.

Didn’t work for me. All it did was scroll down on the page.

Are we sure this is a feature and not a bug?

BAMAToNE, aren’t all bugs undocumented features? :)

Speaking of search engines doing something for Opera first, have you visited this site yet: http://wii.clusty.com/ ?

Yeah, I discovered this one by accident one time when I was trying to, well, get to the end of one of my emails. I would definitely side with “bug” for this one. I’m just very glad that there is an option to undo the deletion, or I would have been much more pissed about this. ;)

Didn’t work for me, do you have to view the message or do you have to be in a folder and have it selected with the checkbox?

  12. 12 Martin

Aha :) you have to have shortcuts activated in the settings :)

It works if you have keyboard shortcuts turned on, but this is hardly a feature, more of a bug. Many times I’ve pressed END trying to get to the end of my message, only to find my message trashed! It’s actually extremely annoying and not a feature at all.
