Opera on the $100 laptop from the OLPC project

Håkon Wium Lie (pictured right), the CTO at Opera Software, and others at Opera had some fun installing the Opera desktop browser on the green $100 laptop from the OLPC project.
The machine runs on Linux with cheap hardware, and is not really fast – but Opera’s performance is excellent, according to the tests.
The OLPC Project sent Opera the laptop to make sure the Opera browser works fine on it. You can read about their experience in the blog posts by Hakon and Claudio. There’s also a Slashdot discussion on this.

Pretty cool. Now if he can just convince the OLPC to pre-install it on all the machines they make. It’s a bit dishartening to see them promote ideology over what could possibly the best solution for the computer. Most of the children/users would not care as much about how the software was made as much as what they can DO with it. Open source is a great learning tool as well, but the users of the OLPC would be grateful to be able to do what they need to more effeciently than the current solution. (No disrespect to Mozilla fans, as the browser is nice on any regular computer. However, Opera has consistently done work to install its software on low-resource devices.)
