GAMASUTRA reports on a new independent website that has been launched by gaming enthusiasts that features Flash-based games designed primarily for the Opera browser on the Nintendo Wii.

The site, called WiiCade, already has more than 20 games uploaded, and ready for when the Opera browser becomes available for the Nintendo Wii.

Is this a taste of what’s to come? If creating games for the Wii is as simple as creating a Flash game, then it would no doubt spur a lot of creativity and major interest for the Wii as a gaming console for all. I’m sure this was part of the reason why Nintendo included the Opera browser in the Wii.

Thanks for the info. I went ahead and posted an article about it on my own blog as well.

I’ll also have to remember to mention that to anyone I know who gets a Wii.

How does one design plugin application for a particular browser, I wonder ? What’s there to optimize ?

The games are not run by Opera at all, the plugin is not Web.

I played some games, and they’re of dubious quality: byte size, graphics, advertisements, user interface, messages.

On second thought, I guess you mean “designed primarily for any browser on the Nintendo Wii.”

As the collection of games looks now, they’re not designed for Opera, and not for any of the Wii’s innovations, and again, let me cast my doubt that Flash applications can ever be.

Dante??? Opera is the ONLY browser on Nintendo Wii…..

Dante, the Flash games cannot be optimized for any browser, and that has never really been an issue. The issue is always that websites are desgned to not work properly in Opera. This site, however, is designed specifically with functionality in Opera in mind, so the site itself (the HTML/XHTML, CSS, and any JavaScript/ECMAScript).

I don’t know if you’ve ever visited a website that uses JavaScript to block the Flash plugin from loading if you don’t have a new enough version (such as Flash player 9), but these scripts often are written in ways that they really only work in Internet Explorer and Mozilla.

Like the potential of sites like that… So Opera or webmaster of wiicade.com should make sure the browser works… Using latest 9.10 weekly, ERA doesn’t work… (fit to width and small screen rendering)…
