Opera Mini serves up 1 billionth webpage

Opera Minitoday served up its one-billionth webpage since the browser’s official launch seven months ago.

Opera Mini is Opera’s tiny mobile web browser that is designed to enable the web on mobile phones that would normally be incapable of running a Web browser.

Instead of requiring the phone to process Web pages, Opera Mini uses a remote server to pre-process the page before sending it to the phone, which makes it perfect for phones with very low resources, or low bandwidth connections.

Pages are reformatted and compressed before being sent to the phone, so they only use about one fifth of their normal amount of traffic.

The most popular sites, according to Opera, are Google search, community and dating sites, e-mail and adult content.

More than five million active users worldwide use the Opera Mini browser, with the highest number of users coming from Russia, closely followed by the United States, India, Scandinavia and the UK.

The most popular sites on Opera Mini are:

Opera Mini is increasingly being installed by both mobile phone carriers (operators) and manufacturers. T-Mobile is the biggest phone carrier to pre-install Opera Mini on some of their mobile phones. Even eBay has its own customized version of Opera Mini.

Opera Mini runs on all phones that support Java, which most already do. It is estimated that there are more than 700 million Java enabled mobile phones in the market.

Opera Mini 2.0 is available as a free download from mini.opera.com

Opera Mini is really good, sometimes it’s faster than using an RSS reader or wap version of a page.
