What would you like to see in the next Opera desktop browser?
927 CommentsPublished July 3rd, 2006 7:14 PM EDT By Daniel Goldman
After the successful release of Opera 9 and its record number of downloads, Opera is moving right along with the next version of the browser.
Opera, this week, will be working on the initial product roadmap for the next version of the desktop browser, and is looking to its users for input. In particular, Opera is looking to prioritize what features Opera users, especially web developers, are craving.
I sent in my list of features and functionality that I would like to see implemented to the Opera team working on the roadmap, last night. The most important feature that is missing in the Opera browser, IMHO, is an Update Manager (similar to what Firefox has). I’ve written about it last November here on Opera Watch. (Read: Where is Opera’s Update Manager?)
Now Opera wants to hear from you, the one who will ultimately use the final product.
Here is your chance to have a say in what makes it into the Opera browser. What do you think is missing in the desktop browser? Are there any features or functionality you’d like to be added? Is Opera not supporting your favorite JavaScript or CSS functionality?
The fine folks at Opera will monitor the comments to this post.
Speak up, and be heard.
If you enjoyed this post, then make sure you subscribe to my RSS Feed.

What makes you so sure?

Chaals, what makes me sure that they’re fine folk? Or that they’ll monitor the comments?

The primary thing that keeps me jumping between Opera and Firefox are the debugging tools. Most of the stuff in the Web developer toolbar can be replicated through bookmarklets, but nothing I can find quite matches the sheer power of the DOM Inspector. I’d love it if they could implement a comparable tool and take the interface to the next level.

Oh, Hi people from Opera. I’m actually an Opera user. Just trying out Flock.
Anyway
1. Update Manager
2. Something similar to Places (in Minefield)
3. Feed Manager similar to Flock (Flock’s builds on Safari’s)
4. Option to increase only Text Size (via Site Prefs)
5. Improve Search Plugin Manager (Move them up and down, try Search Engine Ordering Extension for Firefox)
6. Build on Site Preferences (make every option such as Page Zoom Site Specific)
7. This may not be possible, but add a cooler icon or just make the O look better.
8. Ability to subscribe to Filter Lists in Content Blocker
Pretty much that sums it up.
Good Luck Guys.
using
1. ruby tag support
2. update manager
3. rich text copy/paste support
using
CSS:
text-shadow. With one line of code you can make page noticably nicer.
border-radius. Gecko has it. Nightly WebKit has it.
text-justify:newspaper. IE supports it. It makes justified text much better (Opera’s buggy justification needs work anyway)
M2:
* filters attached to any view (not as separate section)
* PGP/GPG/S-Mime
* Forwarding of multiple messages in a single e-mail
* color-coded mails in views (I want filters to be able to make e-mail appear in red in views)
Mac:
* not losing session when window is closed
* using Keychain for Wand passwords
* optionally using Addressbook for contacts
* drag’n'drop of all text, downloaded files, received email attachments, mails, mail views.
* ability do drag tab to text editor to view page source. support for TextMate as source viewer (dunno who’s bug it is).

Hey there. I am an Opera junkie myself, but I keep on using Flock in addition to Opera due to its synchronization abilities. Hence comes my wish to make Opera browsers synchronize its bookmarks, settings, widgets, etc. to my.opera.com accounts as well as include integration with photos and blog postings at the Opera Community. Try out, see the beauty of synchronization and integration for yourself.
using
9. Private Browsing (Similar to that of Safari)
using
10. New Theme

The only things I really want in Opera right now are:
1) UserJS scripting for the IRC component. (i.e.: “when a user joins this channel and this nick is this, then /msg them hello”, etc.)
2) The ability to keep an IRC channel open in Opera even if you close it’s tab, and then being able to re-open it as if you never closed it via the chat panel of the sidebar.
3) “Auto connect to this network at startup” checkbox for IRC networks, and the option to turn off automatic opening of IRC channels in tabs when connected/joined.
Otherwise, I can’t really think of anything–Opera is a really great browser!!
Keep up the excellent work!
using
HTML mail forwarding/composition capability.
using
11. Resizable Search Box
12. Doing something with favicons (It’s annoying when you use all your favicons for the Bookmarks and Search Plugins just because you cleared your Cache)
13. Easter Eggs
using
14. Real Anti-Phishing (Like Bon Echo or IE7)

Like others have posted I’d like to see a better update manager. Other than that the mail support for IMAP is still limited in my view.
My work email is IMAP based and I still find myself using Thunderbird instead of Opera, little things like the lack of a tree view of the folder list tend to bug me a bit in Opera.
If its possible and I don’t know whether this is at all, but integration with Bloglines would be fantastic!
As Erik said, a decent DOM inspector would be very useful as well!
Overall however the browser is fantastic, have been using it now for quite some years and it does just get better and better!

15. New Password Saving Feature described by Myk Melez here
http://www.melez.com/mykzilla/2006/02/improving-firefox-password-saving.html
16. Similar to “I’m Feeling Lucky” in the Address Bar.
17. Animation when you create or close or reorder tabs.
18. Something similar to Live Bookmark and Microsummaries (to quickly just glance at the news)
using
M2:
* automatically set From: field when replying to mailing lists (which allow mails from certain addresses) and to certain groups of contacts (separate account for bussiness and family).
* alt-click on column to show messages matching clicked value (see The Bat!) – click on attachement icon shows only maisl with attachements, click on person’s name, shows only mails from that person. Unlike views, these ‘quick filters’ can be accumulated. ESC returns to normal.
* check spelling as you type (+ support CSS3 wave border)
* UI for RSS. Current plain HTML link under message looks like quick’n'dirty hack. There’s no UI for post categories and other metadata (category-based threaded view might be a powerful feature).
* allow mail views to show fragments of messages in the same view (not in preview pane, but between messages themselves). This will allow RSS to be more safari-like and e-mail more outlook-like.
* don’t show unformatted XML when opening RSS/Atom feed (when user followed link instead of using icon in addressbar).
* don’t use developer’s error console for reporting e-mail problems
JS:
* allow UserJS to add or change Opera buttons (button labels) read and set checkboxes, so they can report status and be controlled from browser’s chrome.
* make JS messages to the point. Show variable names, report exact type names, show current values.
* make error console as panel… or just bring back the previous HTML-based console, so I can tweak it as I like.

Oh yes and folders for feeds would be useful so its easier to catagorise feeds (e.g. Personal, Work etc).
It would be nice also if the email filters behaved more like thunderbird where it can automatically move emails to certain folders etc which I find very useful to prioritise emails.
using
Oh, yeah, I’d also like to see these BitTorrent-related things added in:
1) Skipping certain files in .torrents where multiple files are included (probably via the transfer’s “properties” dialog)
2) More information on individual files in torrents (i.e.: # of pieces remaining, % complete, etc.)
3) Torrent priorities
Other things:
1) Extra “special fields” as needed in wand.
2) Fix dragging of widgets in Linux version. I’m using SUSE 9.1 right now, and if I try to drag a widget for too long, it will fly off the screen uncontrolably. This probably isn’t Opera’s fault, because other apps that have borderless windows that you can drag do the same thing, but maybe Opera could design a simple implementation of moving widgets that works? That’d be extremely awesome, but I don’t expect it to happen, since it’s not really Opera’s fault.
And that’s all I can think of for now. Thanks again for making the best browser there is!
using
I don’t know, if this bug is still unfixed.
But when you right click on a mailto: link with a Subject, and try to copy it; then everything after mailto: gets copied (including &subject= and all the code stuff after it. Firefox gets it right by copying only the email address. It would be nice to see it fixed.
using
You can see what I mean by right clicking and trying to copy Daniel’s email address in the Poll section.

Replying to #15:
About the tab animation: if that’s going to be added, it should be an option–some of us don’t have any processing power to spare.
using
Oops, sorry. I guess you’re right. That’ll probably never materialize given that it might be Power Hungry
using
3 simple things:
1. Form autocomplete IE/FF way.
2. Ability to do some basic stuff (delete, new folder, drag & drop…) from bookmark’s menu right click menu.
3. In Windows version: REAL native top menu bar behavior (ie, no selected coloring on hover).
That’s it!
using
1. Update manager
2. Browser sync (like Google Browser Sync)
3. Better feed interface. It looks like **** compared to the rest of Opera :p That probaby goes for M2 as well, but I don’t use it.
using
- form autocomplete
- session management for single window
- button for updating all feeds
- optional native theme under kde
using
I generally use Firefox but gave Opera a spin for a week and prefer Opera “vanilla” to Firefox “vanilla.” The only things that had me going back to Firefox was a few extensions: Sage because I prefer feeds next to my browser window; DOM Inspector; and Firebug for debugging Javascript. So the features I would like to see are developer tools for testing– plus CSS support for :target would be great!
using
Just a few:
M2:
IMAP support needs to be improved big time.
When you delete a message in one of your imap folders, it should be moved to your imap trash folder. ( Need an option to specify it first. )
When you create a draft, it should be uploaded to your imap drafts folder. (need an option to specify it first)
When you mark something as junk, it should be moved to your imap junk folder. ( need an option to specify it first.)
Also need options to automatically empty the trash and junk imap folders.
None of this local filters mumbo jumbo as that’s just not what IMAP is about. Keep that for pop3.
Put simply, we need an option to turn on a webmail-like (or thunderbird-like) interface for IMAP with great drag-n-drop support etc .and be able to manipulate everything on the imap server *directly* like other clients can.
HTML composing for others.
Feeds:
If feeds are going to use the mail client, we need to be able to adjust the view/toolbar settings separately. User might want to display just a message list for feeds, but display both a message list and preview for mail.
Printing:
We need to be able to print everything in a selection. Not just text. Printing needs to surpass IE.
other:
Selecting and copying of rich text for pasting in other applications.
using
How about fixing a major piece of all rendering regressions since Opera 7 ?
Anyway,
* better javascript debugging, and error messages
* error console embeded with the rest of Opera’s UI
chat logs for irc
* relaxed security for panels, or load a widget inside a panel, because many users don’t like widgets clutttering their desktop, like me
* fix all the gaps in DOM 1 and DOM 2, CSS 1 and CSS 2.1… it’s about time
* major ftp support (download, upload, rename, delete, multiget)
* download queing
* persistent store for userjs
using
1. Update Manager
2. Grouping of feeds
3. Seperate Feeds into seperate panel
4. Right click for wysiwyg editors
5. Column layout display in css
6. Border radius in css
7. DOM inspector. Please!!!!!
8. View Source is annoying cause you can’t hit / to bring up quick search
9. Something like the webdeveloper toolbar
Opera already is my fav browser for developing, but the addition of developer tools like are found in the developer toolbar and DOM inspector of FF would mean I can use Opera exclusively for testing
using
To match correctly all menus and functions, especially search functions, with Japanese and the other Asian languages.
using
I’m a developer, so I care more about the web technologies that Opera supports.
JavaScript:
- Object.watch() / Object.unwatch()
- Array extras
CSS:
- overflow-x / overflow-y
- :root
- :last-child (Opera supports :first-child, that just doesn’t make sure to not support :last-child)
- :target
- :empty
- :contains()
- :not()
HTML:
- rowspan=”0″ and colspan=”0″
- cellspacing=”n%” and cellpadding=”n%” (currently percentage values are treated as integers)
- Better looking optgroup
Developer tool:
- DOM inspector
using
Typo, I mean “that just doesn’t make sense to not support :last-child”.
using
Also, things that will make Opera better:
- Use better font for Chinese please. Now Chinese webpages just look bad under Opera.
- Better QA on Chinese (simplified) version of Opera. See the problems I encountered in Opera 9 Chinese (simplified) version
- Extension, extension, extension.
using
UI:
1) tagging support for bookmarks
2) mechanism to support remote bookmarks in XML-like formats
3) mechanism to use roaming profile
4) mechanism to backup profiles
web tech:
1) support XBL2
2) support CSS3 selectors
3) support CSS3 multi-column layout
4) support CSS3 advanced layout
using
- equivalent command of reorderring current tabs to the previous/next tabs for keyboard settings
- Better find highlighting like what Maxthon does, it allows highlighting text as multiple words simultaneously by separating text as a unit
- advanced APIs for widgets, I want to manipulate the UI elements of Opera using APIs, and etc…
using
A working email client!
I mean, M2 would be very nice, but it’s so buggy that it’s completely unusable (at least IMAP, have never tried POP). It locks up, hides old messages, doesn’t download new messages, creates duplicate messages, can’t move certain messages, and so on ad infinitum.
using
+ reorder toolbars. I want my personal bar under the address bar.
using
If there was one thing I want to happen with Opera, it is for the download manager to be overhauled. At the moment, I don’t trust Opera with my big important downloads – here’s what would make me happy:
- Ability to resume transfers after restarting Opera (is it meant to be able to do this? because I’ve never had it work on me)
- Allow user to add multiple sources for files and ability to download from these sources simultaneously
- Ability to use something like FileMirrors to find extra sources and submit sources (default: opt-out)
using
It would be nice if “Fit to width” would work in the source code view.
using
I like to think Opera is flawless but there are a few addons that would be welcome.
*RSS Feed organized in folders just like the Widgets
*Widget control from the taskbar icon (just like the Widgets menu
using
Dear Opera developers,
what I want to be changed in next Opera version
are things removed, not added.
First, and most important, focus on fixing bugs.
Do exhaustive beta testing and deal with 95% of bugs
_before_ you release the new version. Not in x.01,
x.02, etc bug-fix patches.
“Release WIR” worked great, “release at [date]” doesn’t work at all.
And second, throw away glittering eye-candy useless
stuff.
Widgets? What the hell is that good for? Bit torrent?
Code good download manager _first_, then tinker
with Bit torrent. UserJS? Oh great, but why did you
brake UserCSS _again_?
using
please, PLEASE make an option to backup and restore all my settings between installs (toolbar, personal css, skins, etc.).
using
1. Update Manager.
2. Debugging tools. I’d love something similar to Firebug.
3. A better source viewer. There’s a few cases where the highlighting gets out of whack. Line numbers would be nice too.
4. RSS folders or feed merging. When I have 40 feeds, going through a long list is a bit annoying. If I could put them in folders or merge certain feeds into on (example being friends blogs), I’d be happier.
using
1. API/SDK allowing extensions
2. Form Filler
3. Update manager
4. Better ftp support.
5. A more improved implementation of widgets. Each widget shouldnt make a new entry in the taskbar.
using
1. Extensions. Plain and simple. :p
Just kidding.
But I would like to see what Opera currently offers brought forward.
Right now, we have UserJS and buttons to customize our browsing experience, and widgets also; but most people cannot find them without a lot of digging.
A few of my ideas on how to capitalize on them would be to include them in the Opera Community and changing the Customization area to the “Add-ons” area or something similar.
Also, it would be cool if the add-ons’ installation could be automated somehow, with developers choosing certain features to add, and having them placed into the interface (like putting a button on one of Opera’s toolbars, a userjs added to a webpage, and a widget to tie them together–much like installing a setup). Notsomuch a new feature, but just an easier way for the “average” user to find and install them.
Other than that, the only other thing I can think off would be widget management from the tray icon, and a show-all, hide-all button for them. (Not sure about applying this on other systems than Windows though). Oh, and a new icon for Opera would be nice.
Now what are you doing still reading this? Go and get working on the new Opera browser!
using
Opera should do better with using network.
Opera browser sync, just like Google browser sync for firefox(http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/browsersync/).
Saving opera configuration all at Opera Server, so we needn’t re-config opera when we reinstall or use opera between different computers.
Please see my notes on the different between opera and google: http://my.donews.com/jnan/2006/05/17/software_opera_internet_google/ (in Chinese, but you can translate it into your language with help of google translate, like this english copy: http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fmy.donews.com%2Fjnan%2Ftag%2Fopera%2F )
using
One-click backup. You would not believe how important it is when you have to reinstall your OS or move everything from one computer to another. Currently it is like pain in the a…
using
Socks5 support please!
using
Better Import/Export options would be one i know some would like.
API:
I would REALLY like a way for an external program to query opera for say how many unread emails there are and stuff…
Maybe a COM Object that could be used to access some internals of opera would be handy, To prevent malicious applications from taking over opera you could perhaps limit what the api could be used for(like only reading certain things from opera).
Uhm.. Also, Changing the DEFAULT theme from the auful setup which REALLY confuses those coming from IE/FF.
Seriously, anytime i do a fresh install of opera i spent 10-15minutes moving icons around, changing toolbars, etc, just to something that most would find ‘normal’
Even just having a wizard on a ‘fresh install’ which asks for the default toolbar layout, or a more familiar IE layout.

using
- An optional skin which feels like KDE, maybe the upcomming KDE 4 style.
- The same for Windows Vista. I hate it, if every app has an different look and feel compared to the OS. And most user made skins don’t look that great.
- Simple save&restore of made preverences. I need up to an hour to reconfigure an newly installed Opera.
- Remove the ugly search dialog! Every time I search something, the first match is hidden by the dialog. Compare Firefox – I like that behavor.
using
Things I’d like to see in the Opera Web Browser:
Better CSS support.. With Google developers working on Firefox 2, and a massive work in progress on Gecko, Opera needs to finish implementing the rest of CSS 2, and get a head start on CSS 3. I’d hate to see Gecko based browsers blow Opera’s standards compliance away… (Not that Konqueror hasn’t already done that)
Some performance enhancments in the rendering engine. There are a lot of things that move and resize in CSS and JavaScript that do so very slowly in Opera. Examples (check out the animation examples, which should run smoothly). Opera’s rendering engine is lightweight, but has a tendency to use too many resources (and max out CPU usage) when rendering something that’s moving. I’ve heard that Opera Software is afraid of messing with a certain feature, even though it would fix this issue, but it really needs addressed.
Drag and drop toolbars. Not an essential, but being able to drop the toolbars in the exact order you want them would be nice.
Widgets that are capable of docking in a toolbar. It’d be nice to have the ability to integrate a widget with a toolbar, as if it were a button. It would make for a simple weather widget that doesn’t get in the way of the page being viewed, or another application.
An option to load a widget on startup. There’s no way I’ll remember to start them up by hand, so they’re no good to me if they won’t turn on by themselves…
Last, but not least, I’d like Opera Software to take this into consideration when going over all of these feature requests (mine included). I think it really brings the whole idea of feature requests into perspective.
Thanks for taking the time to listen to a delusional mind. It’s always refreshing to know that you guys really do care about what us peons think…

I only have on request: improve the printing functionality! It happens quite often that Opera is not able to print properly. Example: http://www.amentio.no/
using
I whould like to see support for Trackerless BitTorrent trasfers (DHT)!
using
More focus on M2, please. (See “Compiled M2 wishes” in the wish list)
Expand the concept of Access Points to other parts of the browser as well: Bookmarks, contacts, notes…
Official Opera on USB support, ideally multiplatform.
Opera PIM? And no, widgets don’t do it for me
The searches need a proper editor where we can move searches up and down etc. OpSEd is not quite obsolete yet.
Opera services: Bookmark, Contact, Notes etc. sharing over the internet for multiple Opera installations (synchronizing home/work machines, etc.) – also a good way to generate income from “premium” users, I think. Could be integrated into my.opera. Maybe I’ll expand on this idea sometime in the wish list.
using
The title said “features users are craving”, so I guess fixes are implicit
– M2: private emails. If Opera is installed with separate settings for each user, then why not have the mbs files encrypted with the master-password or something ? This goes for IRC details too (”perform outgoing commands” on connect usually contain some private authentication to IRC servers), but not for Feeds
– Wand:ability to jump to wand management for the current site
– Wand:why hide the fact that the Wand passwords are retrievable when you know Opera’s master password ?? I have to jump through JS hoops every time
– UI: ability to undo all commands, especially close window with lots of tabs in it, and close tab when filling a form (paranoid copy to note might help, I know)
– Dev tools, like decent DOM Inspector. Especially style rules for elements
– Enhancements of stats like page size, d/l speed, encoding sent: I want log of HTTP headers, most notably
– Transfers fixes
– Saving is improving, but I would like Opera to save things listed in CSS (like background: url(image.png)) and just maybe, in JS
I know this is not a voting poll and devs will consider the best suggestions above (and bellow. and level), some of them really whet my appetite for the next version. Some are just crazy
Oh, and extensions, please. Just kidding.
using
Minimize to the system tray, even when the mail/feed thingy is not turned off. Maybe an option for it.
using
1. Stability, stability, stability. Don’t crash.
2. Linux Opera’s qt related compatibilities in CJK input.
3. Compatibility with major web services, as Google something.
4. More CSS/ECMA Script compliences.
5. Above all, fast in speed and small in size.
using
I agree strongly with many of these ideas and hope Opera takes the community’s opinions into consideration! Opera should identify the things Firefox offers that Opera cannot match, as this is preventing it from increasing its marketshare amongst those using alternative market (which I see as Opera’s most likely potential market.)
Speaking as a Mac user, please, _please_ dedicate some resources to making Opera a really great Mac app! Some heavy tweaking and beautifying of the native skin and some simple native Mac features\shortcuts\etc would make Opera a far stronger contender on the Mac platform and justify the effort already spent on making it such a fast and stable port. The Mac forum at My Opera is a great source of wishes related to Opera being better for Mac – creating a perfect Cocoa imitation skin is the first and most important step here.
using
Saito point 3. Shouldn’t that be sent to GoogleWatch? :-p
using
I’m actually quite happy with the browser core; I have few quirks with integrated Flash-stuff, but I’d guess they’ll fix that.
For the next major version I’d like to see M2 enhanced further, from simple things (nicknames for E-Mail-Adresses) to more advanced stuff (HTML composing, text blocks similarly entered like in The Bat, custom reply/compose templates for each contact).
However, what I’d really like to see would be the addition of an integrated calender, where I could link dates with mails and URLs and have a reminder for it. But given the general feedback here so far, I doubt that this will happen.
using
RSS feeds into folder would be great.
IRC slightly more options
M2; I’d like mail that was not filtered into another folder to go to a ‘general’ folder. Your intray has all mail, so its harder to delete old mail since some are actually filed elsewhere (in a ‘view’) and you do not wat to delete those. If there’s a ‘general’ view/folder, you now you can delete things in it because you know they are not in another folder.
Bookmarks: being able to move/delete them from the menu would be very handy.
using
:: High Priority
1. Complete AJAX support.
2. Encoding on Site Preferences.
3. Update manager FTW.
:: Not so-high priority
1. Show/hide with one click from tray icon (tray icon useless otherwise) for Windows
2. Folders for Feeds.
using
* Remove [target="_blank"]
* Reload userStylesheet like 8.54 for edit&testing render
using
The most important change I would like to see in Opera is FLEXIBLE and MOVEABLE TOOLBARS. I just want to move address bar to the same line as menu bar, change width of search bar, rename shortcuts dragged to bars and so on. It is possible for every other browser (Firefox, MSIE) but not for Opera.
Opera interface has very fast response, it is very speedy and I like it very much, but unfortunately it is rigid and there was no significant change since I remember.
using
One again, killer feature would be – feed and bookmark sync via my.opera. And thanks for Opera 9!
using
I would like to repeat the HTML mail once again: We can read it in M2, why can’t we also compose it?
There are occasions where I need to be able to format my message or embed an image for clarification, and I keep an Thunderbird installation just for this purpose. And no, attaching a pdf document is not the same thing.
using
1. EXTENSIONS, EXTENSIONS, EXTENSIONS
2. Better feed reader with folders (take a look on )
3. Form autocomplete like in FireFox
4. Remote bookmarks and feeds
5. Download queue in transfers
using
One thing more:
- fast and not-resource-greedy address auto-completion, even for large history volumes (over 1000 addresses)
- the same auto-completion for forms
using
I’m not craving so much, I think almost everything is perfect, but I want a new interface and maybe a cooler icon. I believe that there’s more things that can be improved in Opera, but I only use Opera to surf the internet. I’m not using widgets, M2, feeds etc. so I don’t know if anything is needed to be fixed there. Sorry if my english is bad, I’m just a 14 year old swede, but I hope that you understand what I want to say and that you don’t lose respect for me as I am only 14 years old. My opinion counts to.
using
The second point meant to be in my previous post:
Better feed reader with folders (take a look on Akregator)
using
I’d like to see ftp upload capability, and improved IRC chat support, oh and an updater too.
using
Based on importance:
1. Bug fixes
2. Speed (specially the startup when there’s a big cache)
3. DOM Inspector
4. JavaScript Debugger
5. Update manager
6. Serious improvements for Search Engine (separators and some more stuff).
7. More site-specific options.
8. WYSIWYG editing for the mail client.
The list could go on.
using
I’m happy to know at least Olli watched here, thanks a lot.
For those who new to Opera, not working Google Service is big issue, albeit it’s their faults, I recently came to think so.
using
1. Update Manager.
2. Debugging tools. Especially for javascript.
3. A more improved implementation of widgets. Each widget shouldnt make a new entry in the taskbar. And put the widget menu in the tray icon menu.
4. Although I have not had any specific problems with M2 the IMAP support could be improved.
Other than that, keep improving the best browser known to mankind.
using
1. An option that prevents download links fom opening a blank new tab would be fine and very useful (like the FireFox extension “Disable Tartget for Downloads”).
2. Update Manager
3. A better search engine

For me personally, I would really like to see a version of Opera that supports the Yahoo! Mail Beta. Also, I would like to be able to synchronise my contacts with other applications (in my case, my Yahoo! contacts). It’s a nuisance that I have one set of contacts in Opera and an overlapping set in Yahoo! (which sync with my mobile phone, but not with Opera).
I know Opera doesn’t want to be a PIM like Outlook or Notes, but as long as M2 is a part of Opera, there is information in Opera that could be very usefully sync’d with a PIM (local or online).
Cheers, Tony.
using
I am surprised more people haven’t said extensions….:)
- Bookmark sync (maybe indpendant of del.icio.us and so on, and with my.opera.com as already said).
- Update manager.
- More CSS3 implemented.
- Anti phising.
- Some integration with Microformats? Automatic detection of hCard, and possibility to add it to your mail address list?? Too experimental?
- Red lines under words spelled wrong. Like in Konqueror, Fx Minefield and Word.
Probably lots more too. But now lunch is over, so back to my desk upstairs in 40deg C…:(

Socks support. So that I can use the mail client at work. IE and FF both have socks support, but Opera doesn’t.
using
RSS reader usability:
1. Looser integration with the mail client. Currently the RSS reader has some annoying limitations if you choose not to configure the mail client (f.i. the corresponding panel is not available).
2. A feed aggregator.
3. Threaded view for feeds, like Firefox’s Sage; a more compact item view, like Firefox’s Feedview.
4. A connection throttling counter separate from the browser’s connection counters. Reloading the feeds is not a time-critical operation, it shouldn’t swamp the line with dozens of simultaneous connections every few seconds.
5. Automatically delete the read feed items when a threshold (count / time, configurable per feed) is reached; automatically purge the deleted items when a time threshold is reached.
using
Avoid annoyances
1) Bug Fixing
2) Save page with images in a separate folder
3) Copy richtext/html to clipboard (Just like IE)
Core changes

2)WYSIWYG in M2
3)Calendar/Task manager in M2
4)SOCKS support
5)More CSS3 selectors
6)Auto Update (like firefox)
Minor Changes
1)Check for update of widgets
2)Folders for Feeds
3)Increase text size only
4)Encoding in Site preferences
5)Offical DOM inspector and Developer toolbar
6)Toolbar widgets (html contents in toolbar)
7)Export Favourite to IE
8)Allow users to “create” new toolbars
9)Improved Default skin
10)Better Bug tracking/reporting system

The features that I would like to see on the next version are:
1. Update Manager
2. More compability on the websites
3. Better Content Blocker, that can support, receive and auto-update filter files, like the Filterset.G
4. More stability and speed
5. On the Status Bar, a section to put the information about the network:
legend: speed in/traffic in | speed out/traffic out
And on the right, show our IP with an option to copy it…
6. On the Status Bar, a section where we can see the count of ads/popups that had been blocked, and right click on it, we could see their url and open them…
7. Improve the M2 to became the best Email client on Earth, like your browser already it is!

what I miss most:
- update manager
- profile backup
- possibility to see and export wand passwords
- automatically move mails into folders
- improved reliability of the mail client (although there has been progress already), e.g. “stop downloading” button does not react
- mail categories fully configurable (add new ones, rename them)
- export mails and notes
- more input fields for address book (see Thunderbird)
- display unstyled XML files
- fix performance issues with very long HTML code
- respect charset ASCII setting
- make fast “back”-button default setting again (hard to find in opera:config / UserPrefs)
- documentation of opera:config (which is an excellent feature!)
quite a long list, but with some of these topics I see it’s getting into the right direction.
using
RSS:
1. Folders for feeds – I have 159 feeds, and these spread across THREE menus. Reading feeds is actually beginning to become cumbersome. Not so cumbersome as using a seperate feed reader – Opera is still faster and more convenient – but it’s getting borderline to be honest.
2. Nicknames for feeds – Why can’t I just jump to a feed by using a nickname, like I can for page bookmarks? Even if I have to preclude the nickname with rss: or feed:, this would be a major improvement in getting to feeds when you have a lot of them.
3. Opening feed links automatically – Just about every feed item has a link attached to it. Why do I have to click on that link? With a little experimenting, I’ve found that I can TAB into the feed item, and then use SHIFT+DOWN to keyboard navigate through the links. Nifty, if cumbersome. Shouldn’t I be able to open the orginal linked feed item just by hitting enter? (With CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER to open in a background tab, for consistency? Please?)
The feed reader is good, but only for small numbers of feeds. It needs improvement…
Mail:
1. Certificates – I’m not a huge user of the M2 client, partly because (as others have pointed out) it has no GPG/X.509 security support. I’ve used the mail client in emergencies, and I liked it. But I can’t consider using it full time without this support.
Notes:
1. Better import/export options – Notes are just text files, right? So why not let them be imported/exported accordingly?
That’s about it. Opera is my default browser, and has been for years. (I even paid for it several times!) These criticisms may seem harsh, but Opera’s still better than the competition. Thanks for listening!
using
-Better open/save dialog. This is painfull to use:
http://my.opera.com/kriko/homes/files/operadialog.png
-Possibility to use KDE native style (like in windows -> windows native)
-Better download manager:
-queue
-overall dl limit
-per dl limit
using
Feeds
As many have told already – grouping feeds into folders. But also a preview feature for a feed would be great too.
Session handling
Allow saving saving only the active window as a session. Also, the switching between sessions (a’la OmniWeb) would be just fantastic! Maybe a separate toolbar for sessions?
Also, you should be able to undo closing a window. I have several times accidentially closed one window with lots of tabs and lost all of them (although it’s not very hard to store all of them using the history panel).
M2
You can specify an image for each contact, but this image is currently quite underused. It would be nice to see the image of the a person when you read an e-mail from him.
Support for

Bookmarks and Browser Sync! I just can’t c´get away from Google Browser Sync. It’s so hm nice. So I say: Bookmarks & Settings syned with my.opera

For a change it would be fantastic if Opera would jump into the Web 2.0 bandwagon before missing a huge opportunity in continuing to be one of the innovative browsers around out there. As soon as Opera starts incorporating some Web 2.0 capabilities, along the lines of the same concept of what Flock has been doing thus far, then we would be off to a superb start for the next release of Opera. The one and only one browser that keeps innovating in an area where not many browsers have ventured exploring further, plus putting together all the best features Opera already has.”

Form autocomplete. I don’t like this feature, but Opera needs it to gain market share. Everyone switching from IE or Firefox want it. I really don’t understand why Opera is so ‘closed’ about it.
A tool for exporting/importing all the Opera preferences for all users in a single file, eventually with email and feeds inside. This would be great and time-saving also for backup and tests (without the fear to uninstall Opera).
Better layout (the default one). Tooltips are so annoying, the status bar is much better.
Better preferences form, with much less options and easier to work with for a newby.
The auto-updater is not so important to me.
Better XSLT support would be nice, but it’s not important.
And finally, it would be GREAT to switch to Bugzilla for user-submitted bug reports. The actual system doesn’t give any feedback to the user.
using
I would love more exciting innovation! But in terms of looking at features still lacking, near the top would have to be:
- option for rich-text clipboard
- option for some form of HTML email (especially considering now things like blogging by email- would allow me to blog while offline, and then send delayed without visiting blog site)
using
1- Error console as a panel
2- Reload all feeds button
3- Save to cache in the built-in source viewer
(For live editing)
4- Text-shadow
5- Moveable Toolbars
6- Keep it fast
7- FTP
Thanks!

The fine folks at Opera should only monitor the Opera newsgroups. There they can find lots of things they can fix. Some problems are not fixed for years due to lack of attention…
using
Would love a feature like Firefox’ “Google – I’m Feeling Lucky” implemented in the addressbar. When you type something in the addressbar + enter= you end up at the first Google result in the search
using
What I really want from the next release is the ability to view my history the pre-version 9 way- listed chronologically as well as alphabetically.
It would also be very nice to recover an accidentally closed window. If I have multiple windows holding multiple tabs, there is not currently a way to get back a window closed unintentionally.
If history could be viewed chronologically it would be easier to re-create the lost window. Alphabetical display is robbing me of an important part of the history information: the chronology of the history
using
The one thing that annoys me most about Opera is my inability to autoselect items in a dropdown by typing a few letters. I don’t know if this is something stupid on my part, or my browser’s. However, if someone could either tell me how to do it, or add that feature in, my life would be complete.
That, and to see Opera as the default browser of choice on every desktop out there
using
Support for Roboform.
using
- Spell checking during typing.
– More responsive GUI during fetching and rendering sites. If open 10+ sites in background-tabs, Opera has to much to do with it, I can do nearly nothing with it (scrolling, closing tabs etc.), while this sites are build in background.
using
I would like to be able to set the maximum number of connections the bittorrent client uses, as some home routers have issues with BT and you need to be able to throttle the max connections for it to be functional. Also, be sure the DHT settings are compliant with private trackers that do NOT allow it.
Being able to skip files within a torrent is a must, too.
using
The features that I’d like to see in Opera and that currently keep me using FireFox as my main browser are
1. The ability to customise my gestures (as contianed in the Mouse Gestures extension.)
2. The ability to force all new windows to open in tabs.
3.The facility to display search results in a new tab.
4.The facility to decide whether new tabs should be displayed in the foreground or background (See Tabbrowser Preferences extension in Firefox.)
5. The equivalent of the Web Developer extension.
6. The ability to switch Flash on/off in site preferences
Thanks
using
1/ Phishing Filter (the only thing FF and IE7 has that Opera does not).
2/ More multithreaded M2 mail client, that does not grind the browser to a halt when it’s doing it’s stuff.
3/Bookmark Sync (essential).
4/ More sites working, wilst remaining the most standards compliant, fastest and coolest browser.
Thanks for listening!!
using
-Should stay small, fast and stable
-Profile Backup wizard
-Update manager
-Improved Transfers, download manager (ability to resume transfers after restarting Opera, KB/s limiter, priority…)
-Minimize to the system tray option
-Prevent download links from opening a blank new tab
-Improved Feeds and Mail
-Just image in thumbnail preview (remove that ugly text)
-Feeds folder separated from mail in “\Application Data\Opera” directory (profile)
-”Media” under Tools-> Advanced. Using Firefox you can click Tools-> Page Info-> Media tab, to easily find and Save media files on the page (images, swf…). In Opera it is hard to save flash files because you need to find name of the file in View-> Source and search for that file in opera:cache.
using
Something very simple – the ability to sort opera:cache by size, name, and site.
The download manger should give the option to launch default torrent client before it takes over bittorent. A friend moved back to opera 8.5 because he could not use his favourite bittorrent client. He did not know about “mime types” and “save target as” – as I assume quite a lot of people wont.

Here we go!
1) Contacts file name on opera:about.
2) Better access/management (import/export) for my own Custom Buttons.
3) Extend the labels feature, enabling an unlimited (!) number of custom labels and more than just one label for the same message.
4) Enable the use of Access Points (or call it Labels, or TAGs) for bookmarks, contacts, notes, transfers, chats, and everything else!
5) Enable the use of THE SAME Access Point (or call it Label, or TAG) for several bookmarks, contacts, notes, transfers, chats, and everything else!
6) Fix the bugs I´ve found related to contacts with additional addresses! Explained at http://my.opera.com/community/forums/findpost.pl?id=1132775 and http://my.opera.com/community/forums/findpost.pl?id=1472594

more IRC-related suggestions from me:
*Channel userlist shows op/halfop/voice status
*Channel userlist shows away status
*reverse text compatibility (see X-Chat/mIRC)
*option to disable smileys
*optional quit/part message file in ~/.opera–a file of messages (chosen at random) that are separated by newlines when you quit/part an IRC channel/network.
If you add all this into Opera (and my previous suggestions), I might swich to Opera as my IRC and BitTorrent client (I use X-Chat/Azureus currently).

I have used and paid for Opera since v6.
Please give more attention to the Mail capability. I would like to send/forward in html format. I need tools to better manage my mail.
using
1. Fix bugs, fix bugs, fix bugs…
2. HTML email composition in M2
3. Opera update manager + widgets update manager
4. Inline spell checking, not based on Aspell (it is the only thing I like about Firefox 2.0)
5. Widgets in the taskbar: right click menu and widget favicons (not Opera icon). Also a possibility to define big icons for Widgets (when doing Alt+Tab in Windows all widgets have the same ugly icon).
6. CSS3 selectors, 3D canvas.
7. Possibility to block iframes with content blocker.
using
1. Simple, improved cookie management in clear English: “Keep these cookies, delete the rest.”
2. More options under Site Preferences such as images on/off/cached, fit to width, and author/user mode.
3. The ability to enable or disable javascript/plugins on a per-tab basis.
4. Move “Mail and chat accounts” under the Mail menu. It makes much more sense there.
using
“Testing” version: offer devs a download pre-configured for more easily testing site compatibility with Opera. Marketshare will only rise if more sites are tested in Opera, so this has to be dead-easy for devs used to testing in IE/FF.
Strict-mode JS Notices: tell devs when they’ve attempted to use common interface that IE/FF supports but Opera doesn’t. Link to a knowledgebase article, which leads me to…
Documentation: Be public and upfront about lack of support for popular proprietary features that IE/FF support and that web devs are itching to use and list practical alternatives and workarounds in knowledgebase articles. In fact, publish usable compatibility scripts if possible.
In the 7.5 days this would’ve been XMLHTTPRequest. Yes, Opera devs were working on it, but web devs were in the cold for knowledge of the current level of support (eg. you couldn’t POST until 7.6 so many sites half worked). If support is in the works, let us know!
This also goes for Opera-specific tech; I shouldn’t have to figure out myself that UserJS doesn’t fire in panels (why not?) or search forums for the most basic widget methods. Devs need thorough docs. Take the PHP docs as a model.
JS Panel: I sorely miss not being able to watch JS errors in real-time in a panel, as I did with v8. In fact, it should be a top-notch panel developed by Opera that ships with the browser.
DOM Inspector: devs love them, plenty of bookmarklet versions exist out there. Grab the best, improve the hell out of it and ship it in a panel or publish it as an official Opera bookmarklet. Grab one of your widget developers for two days and you’ll have this.
using
I want personal resouce ID space. You may be think strange it, but…
using
1) Better/more usable default set of buttons. IMHO Opera’s default button set is a key barrier to better uptake. The default set should include “home”, back/forward WITH history dropdown, etc. The default needs to be a bit closer to what users have learned in other browsers, otherwise they’ll get confused, feel stupid and subsequently ditch the browser.
2) Feeds:
- ability to force refresh/manually check for updates (note that I don’t use Opera for email)
- ability to categorise feeds
3) Text size change, in addition to page zoom.
4) Image handling:
- fit image to window
- could also use “fit content to window height”
5) Print CSS – whenever I print from Opera (whatever version, different printers), I get light grey shading behind the content. No idea why this happens, need it to stop!
6) An update manager would be good, I’ll throw in a vote for that
7) Extensions rather than widgets, in particular a web developer toolbar like FF. I know there are third party toolbars and user JS but they just don’t work as smoothly as FF extensions. That said, one of Opera’s strengths is the vast number of features supported *natively* instead of FF’s reliance on extensions. So… yeah. A balance is probably required there
using
1) RSS reader shows complete html style, like ‘Sage’ in Firefox.
2) Let mouse button be customizable. I wanna close a tab with right click, show context menu with center click.

Oh, something I forget to write earlier, I find it a bit annoying that Opera doesn’t give you any control over what is a “mailing list”. Most of the mail lists I’m subscribed to end up in the “Mailing List” filters, but a number don’t, and there is no way to add them there. So I end up having to define user filters for them, which mixes them in with more important e-mail filters. I would prefer to keep all mail lists together, but that will mean allowing user-defined filters in the “Mailing List” section. I don’t think that would be hard to implement.
Cheers, Tony.

Feeds and Mail:
- Be able to change the fonts when you read feeds and mail. Right now you have to change from Times New Roman in “Webpage normal text” to (ie) Tahoma, but tahoma is a lot larger than Times New Roman, and if I choose to make it smaller, everything looks bad.

*Mac improvements (stability, click&hold for context menu, drawer support)
*Min and Max Tab-width options
*Better JS error messages
*DOM inspector
*More CSS/Javascript support, as mentioned above
*More Site Preferences
*Warn when closing an entire window
*iCal support (if you feel like it)

The things that I am most missing in Opera:
For browsing the Web:
- An improvement of the “navigation bar” to display all the “link rel=”example”" tags. See http://cdn.mozdev.org/linkToolbar/. Maybe taking into account some of the microformats.
- Related to the previous wish, a possibility to view and copy the links to all the RSS feeds listed in the headers of one given Web page.
For development:
- A possibility to see HTTP headers. See http://livehttpheaders.mozdev.org.
- At least a possibility to see the DOM source code of the selection, and possibly a DOM inspector.
Thank you for your efforts to keep Opera the best browser available.

An API. An SDK. Vanilla firefox is a pathetic browser. Firefox tricked out is serious functional competition for Opera.

New, nice, UI. The default UI is terrible. Looks cheesy.
Also, icons in the dialog boxes, under Tools > Preferences. This would simplify some of the complexity of the options in this Preferences box.
A lot of simplifying needs to be done, and work on the UI is gonna do it. Opera is a very powerful browser, but it can’t come off as a complex and hard-to-use one if it wants to make it in the market. Simplicity is the key…

I’ve had difficulty finding, let alone configuring mouse gestures. Perhaps something could be done to make it more intuitive?
Also, I’d like an option to make the tab bar disappear when only one tab is open. That would free up a few pixels.
And why must the mouse change position to the center of the screen when I middle click? I find it disorienting and counterproductive when all I want to do is drag the page down a little.

Option similar to save complete web page as a single page as .mht(web archive) in IE.

So Opera should add this option as default.

Just a heads up.
I’m having a problem with the comment spam filter on this site, over the last couple days many legitimate comments were falsely classified as spam. The comments that are marked as spam go into a spam folder (that I have access to), and aren’t displayed publicly.
If you post a comment and it doesn’t show up on the page, don’t submit it again. I will check the spam folder often, and put it up on the site.
Thanks for your patience.

Categories for newsfeeds would be nice. I’ve got ≈60 Feeds + Newsgroups + IMAP and even at 1600×1200 I have to scroll a bit.
It would be nice to place the less frequent Feeds in an own group. Or categorize them by topic. And then close the group for the time being.

“I’ve had difficulty finding, let alone configuring mouse gestures. Perhaps something could be done to make it more intuitive?”
uh?. Tools>Preferences>Advanced>Shortcuts>Mouse Gestures>Edit. How come is that difficult?, you just need to tell Opera which actions should be performed once you make a gesture.
“Also, I’d like an option to make the tab bar disappear when only one tab is open. That would free up a few pixels.”
Right click on the Page/Tab bar>Check “Show only when needed”.

I’d like to see a tool for Opera which works like Firefox’s “Download them All” extension. Then I could stop using Firefox altogether. Thanks.

1) Better default interface. Opera needs back & forward *with* history dropdown, and the status bar must be turned on. People are used to status bars, they’re present in all browsers. It must be turned on by default. I also suggest displaying the native skin by default – if the user chooses to do so, let him/her switch to a skin of their choice. While we’re at it, draw better default icons.
2) Local help file. It doesn’t have to have everything, but it should have enough to describe the major features and perhaps troubleshoot connectivity. Include a tutorial. Display it as default on a fresh Opera install. Explain browser masking.
3) Extension API. Let people write things that reside in Opera’s chrome.
4) Developer tools.
5) NTLM support.
6) Confirmation for closing *all* Opera windows, Undo closing a window.
7) Improve M2. I’m still forced to use Tbird at work.

@Gyrobo: Right-click on the tab bar and choose Customize. On the Toolbars tab, check “Show only when needed.”
@Vasudev: Opera 9 supports saving as web archives (MHTML).
@Blah: Opera 9 for Windows has experimental NTLM support. Look for it to improve in 9.01.

In descending order of importance (to me)…
1) Please fix IMAP
2) HTML mail. Actually, I don’t want to be able to compose, just to forward would be nicer than having to explain to my colleagues “I got this great offer from supplier x, but I er, can’t actually forward it to you because my email program doesn’t do that”
3) PIM component – An editable calendar would complete the ‘internet suite’ for me. Imagine, integrating the existing messaging and contacts with my schedule – it would be like outlook or sunbird in my browser with the efficiency of only one program running.
4) Autocomplete forms, just using stuff I typed previously. IE has had this for ages.
5) A few more fields in contacts – mobile phone etc.
6) A new icon – this fantastic software truly deserves something better

But as for the mouse gestures comment, I didn’t mean to imply that I didn’t know how to configure mouse gestures. I only meant that to first time users it seems unintuitive (No menu or listing of actions that can be performed by mouse gestures, no listing of possible mouse directions). It did confuse me a little when I first tried to add gestures, though.
As one of Opera’s most marketable feature, I just thought that mouse gestures would be more intuitive.

Anything to help make Opera better. In no particular order:
1) Autocomplete for all fields a la IE/Firefox. It’s a shame having to live without this for ad hoc purposes where it would be beyond the scope of Wand. Make it optional for the paranoid.
2) Work with makers of major add-ons, such as Roboform and Google Toolbar, so that they work with Opera. Do not exclude the major players in this area. I’m not saying open the door for anything, but it’s painful that some obvious tools don’t work in Opera when they work everywhere else.
3) Wand needs to be greatly enhanced, particularly if #1 and #2 above are ignored. At a bare minimum it should have blanket Autofill capabilities such as Google Toolbar does. For further inspiration, see Roboform.
4) NON-circular search. Some of us are used to the way it’s done in other browsers, where the end is the end, and you’re told so. Instead, we have to be too aware of where we are on a page and be “on alert” for a wrap back to the top. Annoying. Make it optional if you like. Or follow Firefox’s example: “Reached end of page, continued from top.”
5) Jumbled toolbar site favicons that have a mind of their own? It’s been in the product so long that I’m beginning to think it’s a feature. It’s not.
6) Having a search field (Google, etc) near the URL field is nice; not being able to have a pull-down with your recent previous searches listed in it is not. I like to be able to instantly recall recent searches, but with Opera I have to rely on my memory. Autocomplete should work here as well.
7) Bulk-up site preferences. Two that come to mind: “Minimum font size” (to boost text size on a selected minority of sites) and “Always load fresh version of page” (for those pages where you ALWAYS want fresh content).
9) Progress has been made with tooltips in v9 (most importantly, banishing interfering URL tooltips to the status bar where they belong), but there’s more to go. Tooltips still pause in coming up for some reason, about a half-second longer than IE’s. Also, alt2title.js here is still necessary on some sites, such as photos on Yahoo.
http://www.scss.com.au/family/andrew/opera/userjs
10) Since the status bar is used by a lot of people for URL information, how about adding a lot more value to it by default? See Maxthon for several ideas in this area. I know presently in Opera there are several things that can be dragged down there, but frankly, there’s not a single thing available that jumps out at me.
11) A Firefox-like updater, like everyone else has mentioned.
12) The ability to do a *quality* upgrade between major versions, like 8.54 to 9.00. Yes, I know that’s supposed to be possible now, but it’s not recommended; or if is, it shouldn’t be, since I’ve seen too many issues in the forum over the years for it to be recommended. The experienced know to do a clean install and then migrate/customize from there.
13) An iron-clad status indicator of what browser one is currently emulating, if any. Right now, due to a complicated hierarchy of the several different ways to do emulation, it’s very difficult to tell what’s being emulated (no, the “Identify as…” button isn’t accurate in all cases).
14) A provision for keeping the content blocker updated automatically with the latest site lists. Not that these lists are to be provided by Opera, but just the ability to point at an end-user specified location and grab the latest version from wherever that is automatically.
15) Ability to “OK” out of Preferences without a long pause. I’ve noticed that with use Opera seems to take longer and longer to OK out of Preferences. It’s not noticeable on a clean install, but very evident on an older install.
16) Rather than having to click on the extremely thin bar bordering the Panel (yes, I know F4 works), how about an option so that when your mouse loiters very close to that area the panel automatically pops out? Something like that, anyway, to avoid the precise click.
17) On the Download File dialog box, the ability to see (and copy to the clipboard) the complete file path of the site (which is not always available on the site itself if they’re trying to obscure it). Right now, in Opera you only get that information after you’ve already downloaded.
18) Ability to right-click on a bookmark menu (as opposed to within Manage bookmarks) and access its properties.
19) When using “Open all folder items” to open a bunch of bookmarks, and then while that’s happening minimizing Opera, please don’t refresh the XP desktop. It’s extremely annoying to see my desktop icons shimmer like a Christmas tree until Opera is done downloading its pages. If you don’t minimize Opera, this doesn’t happen….
20) The ability to re-order your custom searches, as is possible in Opsed.
21) Since so many of the other buttons are graphical, can we have a graphical (and colorful) “Go” button, please? And how is it that this most-expected of buttons (if coming from other browsers) is not on by default? I doubt more than a few non-experts can even find where it is now. Like not having the Status bar on by default, it’s one of those things that make new people go “hmmmmm.”
22) Increase Opera’s GDI usage back to the way it was before 8.52. OK, that’s an inside joke for anyone reading this far, not a real request. Seriously.

I would love Opera to include number detection, so I can click and call any number I look up and add numbers to contacts.
If Opera could also sync. my contacts/bookmarks with an online service and possibly include a call button in the contacts, then I’d be very pleased.
A calendar would also be good, basically online, but possibly with offline view for travel.

1. Improve download manager
2. Update manager – so what if Opera is the smallest installer, if I have to download it again ang again for every new release. The bits and my time add up.
3. If a tab is minized, there should be a visual cue.
4. Extensions/API
5. Ability to ‘turn off’ most of Opera and place all resources on widget. Kind of like a widget mode where Opera will be in the system tray.
6. Ability to export all settings, data (note, bookmarks, etc) into a file to be uploaded in my.opera account. And also to synch it with any Opera browser with proper credentials of course.
7. One click solution in quick zooming: ie. a button when clicked will zoom 120%(should be editable in pref) but when clicked again will go back to 100%. I find 120% a good zoom number for many pages.
8. site preferences should have more options like zoom, images, fit-to-width, etc
That is all. Go OPERA!

-Improved Feeds and Mail

Hi,
There was an excellent feature in Opera 9 beta 2: reparse as HTML. I’m using it for checking my website (served as
application/xhtml+xml). When I detect an invalid page, I reparse it as HTML (opera:forcehtml) and then can correct it (this is a blog, so I prefer accessing the form than PHPMyAdmin). Please bring this option back! By the way, it had a downside (only one): text was rendered as

Option to move left (or right) when closing a tab
This has to be the single complaint I’ve heard the most about Opera. There is no way to reliably have the browser switch to the left (or right) tab when closing the active one.
There are many hacks that try to fix this, but none of them really work because they affect only one or two of the many ways to close a tab (close button on tab, close button on menu bar, keyboard shortcuts, middle-click on tab, mouse gestures, right click menus…).

I would like to see some sort of feature that you could launch your bookmars through the keyboard. A shortcut system like some windows software where you click Ctrl+spacebar then a pop up comes up, then you type the first letters of the software you looking for and a list comes up then you select it. It would be cool if opera did this for its bookmark system, where you can just click two keys a pop up comes up, then you enter the first letter of the bookmark and it comes up then click enter.

widgets are so far useless.
firefox’s extensions are actually usefull because they add functionality to the browser!!! (of course, you’d wish it was included so you dont have to keep updating the extension…)
i actually switched from ff to opera cus i found opera had most of the stuff included (tab-work, sessions etc)
but recently i’ve wanted to use extensions regarding downloading files – either mass-downloading ala DownThemAll! extensions or the one whose name escapes me, which lets me auto-save images/links – and sort it depending on my configuration (domain/path or just domain/extension etc)
possible with a widget? just need some smart guy? well its about time some smart guys wrote usefull widgets – if not possible, scratch widgets – bloody annoying if it can’t be compared with extensions.

Correct handling as for..in loops in js, follow the competition don’t try to inovate in this, it sucks for the web programmer different implementations of stuff, and on at something like a for loop to iterate it by orderered elems when everyone else is doing it by array id is a show stopper..

On install if you detect that “skype:” protocol is registered in OS, also add Skype to helper application for other protocols options. Right now the way Opera handles it (asking with dialog) works in some sense, but when selecting “Do not show this again” it adds wrong thing into protocol options.
I can tell you (since I know the stats for skype.com) there are at least a few hundred thousand Skype users who also use Opera, and making “skype:” protocol calling links work properly for them out of the box would be awesome.

The same CSS behavior of form elements that Firefox and IE support. Whenever I style an input textfield, defining fixed widths and then add padding to that, it works great in Firefox and IE, but Opera ignores the padding so the fields are shorter. This makes it difficult to create a clean, aligned form so we usually just ignore it and leave Opera unsupported in this aspect.

@Ledjani
shift+f2 (you can change the shortcut under preferences) and type the nickname you gave to the bookmark, Opera will take you to the url. You don´t need to type the whole nickname: if you have “Opera” as a nickname and no other bookmark starts with “O”, once you type “O” you are done; if you have, let’s say, “Opera” and “Oslo” as nicknames, you just need to type “Op” and so on…
@those who ask for extensions…
What exactly do you want, an API so you can code your own extensions or you just miss the features some extensions provide?.
Keep in mind that an API doesn´t mean that the missing extension will be implemented, someone needs to code it. You could end up with an API provided by Opera but the extension you miss is not there since no one has interest in coding it for Opera.
Asking for a feature implemented in other browser (built- in or provided via a extension framework) is not the same as asking for extensions as a whole (read API)…

doomguy said:
“Widgets are so far useless”
Um, no. You’ve not found a use for them, but they’re not useless.
They’re not designed to be Extensions. Widgets are small web-based apps which are always loaded in the background. And as such, they’re incredibly useful.
I now use the following widgets: touchTheSky, Calendar and CurrencyConverter.
I have them set to “Always below”, which means that they work just like Active Desktop should have – when Opera is loaded, they’re just sitting there almost on the desktop wallpaper. Go to the widgets menu, and they raise themselves to the foreground for a moment. I want to know what the weather’s like? Sure – it’s there. Very useful for me.
And less than an hour ago, I used CurrencyConverter to convert a cost, and determine that it’ll probably be a next-month thing rather than a this-month thing, because it’ll push me to the edge of my budget.
Widgets are for getting information from the web faster and easier than before. They’re great for that – I find them very useful, albeit in a limited way. They’re not for modifying how Opera works.
Extensions are evidently popular as a suggestion, and maybe Opera will look at them for Opera 10.
Meanwhile, please stop thinking of Widgets as Extensions. The clue, funnily enough, is in the completely different name. Sorry to sound annoyed, but I am getting very annoyed on this point.
(Oh, and thank you Opera for widgets. Great work!)

Better JavaScript support, and whatever else it takes, to get WYSIWYG editors and functions working, such as tinyMCE, vBulletin and FCK editor. Opera simply does not support them, never has, and it’s a site admin’s nightmare trying to keep WYSIWYG editors functional and keep opera users happy at the same time (which you currently can’t).
A better interface for tweaking Opera. I love how I can edit the INI files and add new functionality, but it would be even better if I could do it via an interface.
The rest on my list has already been mentioned.
Keep up the good work Opera team!

The main thing that annoys me is the download manager. While being superior to the default managers of other browsers.
All that it needs is multiple stream downloading (like other third party managers), and a Download All function where you can select a number of links and will download them all.
While I believe Opera to be a superior browser, the main thing keeping me on Firefox is the FlashGot extension.

Perhaps a modularity in the components. For example, making the email and BitTorrent clients optional during install for those that desire a smaller, more streamlined install. This is particularly useful in situations in which Opera is running on systems with an inadequate amount of resources available or for a power user who wishes to use separate software for such tasks.
Also, more mature M2 development.

I’d like to see a Platypus extension equivalent in Opera – the ability to edit the source or selectively add/remove webpage elements via a GUI interface. Eg, in Google, I could go to the image searching page, highlight the search field then go back to the vanilla Google search and ‘paste’ that field below and have that page be the default for all Google visits in future.
Sort of like customizing webpages for your own use.
I’d also like to see a few enhancements for the download manager: allow us to specify the number of simultaneous downloads and the bandwidth usage as a percentage.
Finally, I would like the links sidebar to be more useful: show links from all tabs in the sidebar as a tree like structure so that I can filter the links and open/download multiple links from multiple tabs at the same time rather than having to use the links sidebar for each tab sucessively.

1) Different column behaviour in ‘Transfers’ window.
* I can see no point in having columns proportionally-sized.
* If I increase the width of the Transfers window, only the ‘Name’ column should get wider.
* Other colums such as ‘Speed’, ‘Time’, ‘Size’ contain data whose textual representation varies little in length and so to have to constantly resize them as a side-effect of changing the width of another column is annoying.
* If I change the width of a column, all following columns should maintain their existing width – as with column headers in Windows Explorer, for example.

How about downloading the latest version of Opera?. *sigh*
@ bubbl07
Both, BT and M2, are more or less around 200k of code each, so download size won’t be significantly reduced if you remove them.
Also, they don´t use memory unless you activate them (downloading via the BT protocol or enabling M2).
Opera has previously stated that offering parts of the browser as optional downloads won’t happen; your wish won’t be fulfilled then.

Ok, I really love the opera browser, for right now there a few annoyances that keep making move back to firefox.
1. When i download something. The download manager pops up and takes me away from my page. I would really like it to open up in the next tab, but not take me away from what i’m doing. New tabs should be opened in background option.
2. The tab toolbar appears at the top. I would like to be able to drag this below the address/icon bar.

4. A developer toolbar similar to the one in firefox. This is a really neat tool that i use everyday when building websites.
5. Autocompletion for forms without having to use the magic wand. I don’t know if it’s me, but in opera it never seems to remember my password and complete the form automatically. I don’t want to click a button, it should just remember.
6. RSS Icon. Please make this the same icon as in firefox and ie7.
7. Feeds menu. I would like to view all the articles under each menu i hover over. I hate having to go into feeds page to read the feeds. ie7’s feed system blows badly because of this.
8. Importing feeds. If importing feeds/bookmarks from ie7 or firefox make sure they all work in opera.
9. Update manager. Please let people automatically upgrade their browser. You see, it’s hard work sometimes getting clients to switch from ie as they don’t know any better. It would be good if they get moved to opera, that i will be happy knowing their always going to get the latest updates for CCS support and any security.
10. A new icon. The opera icon is fugly and doesn’t resemble anything to do with the internet/web/ globe. People are used to this and having just an “O” doesn’t let Mr Smith release the icon is for browsing the web.
Ok, i think these are the things that could get me to use opera more often. Small quirks can drive you away from using a browser. To me it’s all about speed. How fast i can do things.
Opera, even though i don’t use it as much as FF is actually my favourite browser……strange but true.

I have to say opera’s main advantage for me is being usable on a machine with 8MB of ram and a 486. Please keep this possible.

Two things mainly:
* HTML editing
* SVG support
Granted, my favorite browser (konqueror) doesn’t support either, but from a developer’s point of view, I would my opera using visitors to be able to make use of such features.

Hi,
I’d like to see the following improvements, especially for the mail client:
* better IMAP support
* It should be possible to start Opera in Mail- or in Browser-only-Mode
* it should be possible to NOT show each of
– email
– mailing lists (OK, I could live with that coupled to email)
– newsgroups
– newsfeeds
* It would be nice to have configurable panel buttons which display any combination of the above e.g.
– email only or
– maling lists + newsgroups or
– newsfeeds only
* It would be nice if Opera did not necessarly insist on displaying rss feeds the way it currently does. There used to be a css style sheet for displaying rss feeds as a side bar. I liked that much better than the integrated rss support. So, please allow me to configure Opera to NOT handle some rss feeds.
* Add a simple way to notify Opera of websites that crash the broswer or display wrongly. While that happens less and less it still happens and everytime I think about notifying you but usually don’t because it is too much hassle.
* Allow saving emails as text and html.
* Allow exporting emails in some standardized XML format so they can be processed by external programs.
* Allow storing email attachments as externals files, maybe even zipped, if they aren’t already, so they don’t bloat the mailbox.
* In addition to “prefer HTML” / “prefer Text” allow also “force Text”: If the mail does not
contain a plain text version, only display a hint and a link for showing the HTML-Version. This would make for easier and a more secure handling of spam / virus mails.
I could probably think of a lot more…

I would very much like to have a browser enable “External Editor” on any textarea input.
There is richtext editor, and there are tricks to half enable external editors, but non of them is elegant. The most elegant or simple way to let user edit text or any file the way he edits on his own is give him a button or link (just like the choose file button) which will open the external editor of choice according to content type (that does require an attribute to the tag, but default to text would be suffice). Upon closing the editor and detect text modification, the browser ready the content in a approarate view mode (the least, just a summary line) and submit it to action just like it does for a textarea.
What do you guys think?

I posted this also on Slashdot. Note that i’m not a web developer, I’m a user.
I’m writing a thesis and I have noticed a few things I’d like:
1) I want to be able to bookmark/save a page locally. Bookmarking is way easier than the “save as” dialogue and is also much easier than finding something in cache. Let me bookmark a page locally, the page could then have a “check for changes” that would download the current version of the page in a new tab.
2) the reason for this? I want a whole highlighting system so that I can markup documents I have locally bookmarked and then look at them later (with those markups). The closest I’ve been able to get to this is with Firefox, saving the page on my harddisk and then using platypus to highlight paragraphs, but that is a suboptimal system. This doesn’t work with online versions of pages, because those can change. The next best system (which requires leaving the browser) is to save to disk and then use multivalent, which allows everything I want (highlighting, strikethroughs, comments, etc) but is super slow and buggy.
3) I am sure I could add more nifty things to this setup. For instance, maybe I could assign keywords to each page I have locally bookmarked, I could have labels like in the mail program, etc (normal bookmarks could have these too, rather than the traditional folder system). The main thing is that almost no consideration is given by any browser to its use by students for research, think of those things!
-Gabriel
ps. I am using a pretty fast computer, but I agree that there ought to be an “old computer” option. For example, the first time opera starts, it could ask if you want to use the old computer version or the new computer version. The old computer version would simply have various settings (including both visual stuff and cache stuff, and possibly features stuff — like using acrobat separately rather than with a browser plugin) that try to avoid pushing the computer too far.

Too lazy to read through all of the comments, some of these things have probably been mentioned already, but oh well.
These are on my personal wishlist:
* Complete support for applying CSS styles to <col> and <colgroup> – I mean, seriously. Even IE6 gets this one right. Why can’t you guys?
* Support for XMPP URIs out of the box – XMPP is more and more emerging as *the* IM standard, even though it’s still a few years off. This is already supported by Opera, but currently you need to tweak it a little to get it to work. So it’d be great if you could support it out of the box.
* Complete CSS 2.1 support – It’s time to bit the bullet. Show us what you’re capable of!
That’s all I’ve got to add.

The biggest improvement I would like would be a better exif information about image files. The current information doesn’t include anything like focal length. ISO, shutter speed, or a number of other useful facts about a image that is embedded in it.
A right click dialog for exif information and a informative pop up would be very helpful. And as a extra perhaps a option to enable the information to show up as a tooltip when you mouse over a compatible image file.

Opera like a compiler parses HTML. Unlike a compiler, Opera 9 doesn’t tell you when it detects errors in a web page. So I’d like to see a toolbar icon in Opera 10 that tells the user when a web page passes or fails HTML validation, like the HTML Tidy plugin for Firefox.
Then Opera users will be less likely to blame Opera and more likely to go to the webmaster of the page in question when Opera has a problem rendering the page.

I’ve been using Opera since version 6. The things I would like to see improved are -
1. Opera M2 needs a good makeover. Perhaps a better way of using mail? Gmail made everyone relearn how to use email, maybe Opera should too. Also, rich text editing is one thing I truly miss in M2.
Maybe mail could be on a separate panel altogether, with far more features. How about ‘Read out all unread mails’? How about ‘Talk to Contact’? How about integrating a good Contacts Manager via the vCard format on mobiles – so that my mobile and browser are in sync? How about sending and receiving SMS from Opera?
2. Whenever I double-click on a web page, the scroll cursor appears in the middle of the screen. Why? Why can’t the cursor remain where I clicked it?
3. Better separation of mail and feeds. RSS has become de-facto browsing method for many. High time it’s treated differently compared to regular mails.
4. Jabber and gmail chat integration. In fact, a complete chat client will go a long way.
As Opera tries to become a more full-fledged commnication medium than just a browser, it’s bound to bloat up. While installation I should get options regarding what all I would like installed!
Finally, a new theme, with new interesting icons. All icons are flat and boring. It would be lovely to install a new version and see nice new icons!
using
1. Ability to link to plain files on the intranet (file://\\fileserver1\readme.html)
2. Three user-definable security groups (high/low/none) that I can select with a button in the toolbar. (on hackfest.com I leave default=high, on Opera.com I click on ‘none’; O should remember this)
3. Too many sites still don’t work (e.g. no links on firingsquad)
4. Web-sync not just for bookmarks, but for all configuration settings and plugins. It takes time to set up O the way I like it.

I forgot the proposal about a new function.

Marketing is what Opera needs.
Nobody in my industy bothers with Opean – we don’t code for it, we ignore it.
The market share is so tiny, it’s not worth the effort.
Opera needs to Open Source itself, change the name and relaunch with gusto – you see, nobody cares about it, because nobody knows about it.
Take a leaf from the mozilla book, and rename the browser. Lets face it, Opera is a shite name for a web browser – it’s horrible.

Improve the look and feel – first and foremost. It is not _bad_ per se but it is definitely not attractive either. I hate seeing the wrong font selections, ugly UI elements which look completely different than the platform’s native ones. (I am on KDE 3.5). I like Opera and use it to view pages being used during development. Many times pages just look better in Opera.
A few suggestions and maybe a bug.
1. The google search bar. I can not move it to another bar. I dont like were it is. For my uses its too small. I would like to be able to resize it or just move it to other empty space above, below.
2. Better ruby, rails support. Sometimes pages just dont load, but will load fine in firefox or IE.
4. About half the time after downloading a movie file it wont open it. Nothing just hangs.
5. And the last is realted to the number 4. Many times after telling Opera for the 9nth million time to open a file and do this automatically for this file type every time. It does not do it. It does it sometimes but then stops. And your then asked again and again same question. Very annoying.
Overall Opera is very good and after seeing a study done showing Opera is the fastest browser even beating out Firefox on some task I have been using it more.

I posted the following to Slashdot. I wrote it moreso as a user than a web developer, but mentioned at the end, it could be useful for developers coding/testing on Windows.
Also, the person who suggested an ActiveX or .NET control to encapsulate Opera has a great idea. Being able to integrate IE into a program is nice and all, but you’re integrating IE.
Yes, I know I'm at the wrong place to suggest this, and I'm aware it's not the greatest idea (good old security), but it's handy.
One of the extensions I have on Firefox on my Windows desktop is IE Tab, that allows a link or blank tab to be rendered with IE rather than Gecko. While the Identify As Internet Explorer and Mask As Internet Explorer are good enough for most sites, some of them still use horrible JavaScript that won't work in Opera. I'm looking at you MSDN!
It gets annoying at work (software development for a major scoreboard and electronic sign manufacturer) to be using Opera and find a search result for MSDN, open it, and have about a 50% chance of it working. It's not the fact that opening IE and viewing the article is an annoyance, it's being so used to just clicking on Opera for an open web site and then wondering where the article went -- the reason I first used Opera, aside from it being the only web browser I knew of for Windows 3 way back when, was that it supported tabs. That advantage is a bit lost when I have 5 IE windows open along with Opera.
And, yes, I'm aware that I'm complaining from a user point of view as well. This, however, would be useful to web developers (who are testing under Windows) to have pages in one window for comparison rather than many.

Well, a lot of important things are already mentioned:
- firefox-like extensions
- stability improvements
- speed improvements – Opera was always fast but Firefox became faster and faster.
Another thing I really happy to see is a advanced bookmarking system. I’m using a dualboot pc with various browsers and sometimes I’m surfing on another PC. And everywhere are different bookmarks. A sql database and some scripting would be nice.
Another thing are 64-bit architectures like PPC64 or EM64T. Why support these? Yes, a web browser doesn’t need 64bit but it would allow using native libraries.
These 5 things would be my prioirty wishes for the next Opera version.
Another idea of mine is a multimedia plugin that comes with Opera and plays any kind of video oder audio. A plugin that replaces Quicktime, Real player and MS WMP Plugins and uses the installed libraries.

Here’s a big list, in no particular order:
1. Support newline characters in the “title” attribute.
2. Correct :first-child behavior when an element is dynamically inserted before the initial first child.
3. :first-child shouldn’t select the root element, since it isn’t a child of anything.
4. Allow the removal of the white-space:pre style on :before and :after pseudo-elements (whitespace in the “content” value should be handled like whitespace in the HTML by default).
5. Background styles on the “body” element shouldn’t be applied to the “html” element when the document is handled like true XHTML (or anything but plain HTML, for that matter).
6. Support URI cursors, or at least support the grammar of it and fall back to the provided alternatives.
7. Support display:table-column and display:table-column-group for all elements.
8. Properly support empty-cells:hide.
9. Properly support min-height percentages (currently, it always computes to zero if the containing block doesn’t have a specified height, even if the containing block is absolutely positioned and sized using “top” and “bottom”).
10. Properly support the “quotes” property when the amount of nested quotes excedes the given number of quote character pairs.
11. Properly support visibility:collapse.
12. Support white-space:ppre-line.
13. Support CSS 3 media queries dynamically, so styles will change if, for example, the window is resized while the page is being viewed.
14. Add more CSS 3 pseudo-classes.
15. Support box-sizing:content-box for form controls.
16. Support CSS 3 cursors.
17. Properly support “opacity”. Currently, opacity is applied separately on foreground text and background, causing some of the background to appear through the foreground text, which shouldn’t happen.
18. Support DOM stylesheets.
using
The thing I want most is documentation! Nothing beats IE’s MSDN website and Firefox’s xulplanet.com website that documents every public and proprietary Javascript method and their parameters and all the supported HTML+CSS public/proprietary tags/rules. IE has an added advantage that all the workarounds for problems have already been discovered and documented in various blogs. Opera doesn’t have this benefit because of a lack of marketshare.
using
I would like that the new opera would include RSS reader in the browser. RSS is very interesting and a very useful way to get updated about information of websites and news. There are many others things but the best I would like to see in a new version of opera is a RSS reader in the broswer or a RSS option.
using
Well done to anyone who’s read down this far!
The most important thing to fix is the default skin. It should be native. Users who want other skins will find them, but most users will expect a new app to look native. Every time I show someone Opera the first thing I have to do is show them how to get the native skin.
The option to switch of styling of form elements has never quite worked properly. Opera 9 has fixed some issues but padding in text inputs now appears.
The cookie notification dialog now forces the relevant page to the foreground (most of the time but not all, weirdly). It would be better if the dialog only appeared when you looked at the page.
using
1. Typing a letter in the address box should only show home pages in the drop down box not other pages associated with the main home page. The sites should be arragned with the top being the most recently visited site as in Firefox. Also adding a menu highlight would be useful.
2. Opening a page in new tab should not make the current view the new tab, again as in Firefox.
3. Progress bar should be continuous. Its hard to read the percent progress of an operation.
4. Allow drag and drop of bookmarked menu item. Also allow delete of bookmarked item without clicking Manage Bookmarks. Again these are features in Firefox.
5. Add Increase text size in View menu.
Opera 9 is a great product, but unless I see the above features and more…it’s still Firefox for me.
using
Extensions API please! ‘Cos its impossible to package in all the functionality that everyone would expect in one package.
I’ve been using opera since 3.52, and until the advent of gmail (or rather opera’s problems with it – mostly fixed now though) and firefox’s extensions I never thought of switching to firefox.
I still use opera everytime there’s a new release, hoping an Extensions API will be released. Please add it in 10!
using
Well, here’s my list:
More CSS3 support: someone has to start implementing this stuff so us devs can use it, and it sure as hell won’t be Microsoft
More rubust extension support: whilst as a browser I find Opera superior to Firefox, firefox has a huge advantage: extensions. The only reason I ever find myself going back is for a few critical extensions like the webdeveloper toolbar.
Better adblock: adblock in Opera 9 is missing one critical feature: adblocking iframes (cp the firefox extensions which achieves this very nicely)
Javascript debugging tools: firefox’s js debugging tools are incredibly useful for js development, and it’d be nice to see comparable tools in Opera.

Two small improvements to the latest version of Opera that would, no doubt, make life much easier for the users. Firstly, the File type of the Open dialog window (see File > Open) should be set to All Files. I use Opera not only for reading HTML files but JPEG, GIF, PNG and TXT files too usually. And it is really a drag to select the correct file type for viewing files other than HTML ones each time. Secondly, the Transfers window (see Tools > Transfers) should always be in the background and out of focus each time I select files for downloading from other active windows. I hate to get back to the original window each time I have to download something.
Anyway, Opera is a great software.
Since, the user base is not developer-based then much effort in improving Opera should lie in the usability and user interface enhancements imho.
using
Extensions, plain and simple. After happily using FF for over a year, no browser can make me switch unless it has a comparable library of extensions and themes. Just open up development to outsiders, and watch the new features roll in. I dislike browsing without my heavily customized FF. Opera may be faster and display more webpages better, but without the extra features I am now used to, I can’t downgrade.
using
I’d like a mechanism which I could use in Javascript to learn what if any accessibility setting or device a visitor uses.
Not every Javascript is inaccessible, but some approaches are and it would be great if there was a more subtle approach to Javascript accessibility than all-or-nothing.
I imagine a relatively simple Javascript object in global namespace that could tell me stuff like the presence of screen reader or its actual use would be of great help. Small namespace polution seems to be a small price to pay for this.

- automatic resume in the download manager
- native themes for Qt/KDE (I don’t know if Opera is still using Qt, and if so which version; but Qt 4.2 is adding glib mainloop integration, so even native GTK/GNOME themes aren’t entirely out of the question)
- viewing things such as PDF files inside the browser (Konqueror does this with KParts, IE with the Windows equivalent (COM?); I have no clue how Firefox does it)
- middle-click panning working the same under Windows and Linux (Windows has a much higher max speed)
- ability to (re)order search engines (simple move up/move down buttons would be sufficient)
- I don’t know how Opera 9 is determining the default application to open files with, but it’s totally broken. The download dialog says opens with totem; and then when I click ‘ok’, it opens with Kaffeine (but occasionally, totem). This worked better in previous versions.
- I also don’t know if the Portland Project has gotten to the point of abstracting file open/save dialogs, but if so, using the native file dialog under KDE and GNOME would be an improvement. (In KDE’s case, at least; I am *cough* unsure about GNOME.)
- a nicer default style (the current one isn’t terrible, but some things, such as scrollbars, are quite ugly)
- keep UI bloat to reasonable levels. the various context menus (tab bar, page, edit field, etc.) are scary enough already.
- removing the Find dialog entirely, in favor of a Firefox-like solution. (I know to use .; many others probably don’t.)
- whatever it takes, get in-browser video working out of the box. this is total voodoo magic and a pain in the ***. some way to easily and globally turn mute on/off for plugins (or all of Opera) would also be very welcome, if technically feasible. (there are few things as annoying as opening lots of background tabs, and one of them (but no clue which) turning out to have a loud flash animation blaring into the music you’re listening to.)

Let the download manager have a “speed limit” capability. I hate having to use an external download manager if I want to cap my downloads.
CSS transparency is slow as a dog with Opera. Find a way to make it faster. I have to use IE for those silly Myspacers that use transparency.

I am using Opera 8.51 , (i have downloaded Opera 9.0, will install later)
When we click Help->About Opera, it opens in current window , by default make it to open in new tab/window rather than current window, becuse if we are already browsing and had opened few sites/pages & if we do open ‘About opera’ , which opens in current window which we were browsing, and after that we close , so we close our browsing window.
So by default make it to open new tab/window

Fix the unix version of opera!
Its really stupid that the linux release of opera 9 doesn’t pass the acid2 test, but the windows release does. That’s not acceptable.
And the unix releases of opera are WAY too slow when searching large pages, or using interactive javascript elements on large pages.
Finally, the unix releases crash way too much. Some complex javascript crashes it, sometimes flash will, sometimes it just crashes for no apparent reason. Please try doing your unix development on openbsd for a while so all the memory management bugs become reproducable crashes and we can have a stable browser.

Avoid bloat. Personally I don’t need an E-Mail client, IRC client, Bittorrent client, RSS feed reader or similar in my browser. If these components were cleanly separated, I’d sleep sounder at night.
Being careful with too many new features is important as well, because I use Opera mainly for one reason: speed. I’d hate to lose that.
That said, I agree with some of posters above – the Unix version needs work. And when will it be possible to disable the Opera tray icon (even if it’s only accessible through config:opera)?
Also, every bit of work put into proper webstandard support is a big win in my opinion.

Opera (nor Safari) support ‘id’ instead of the ‘name’ attribute for image maps in XHTML 1.1. My web site features an XHTML 1.1 image map and the clickable regions do not work in Opera. more support for obscure html written in weird non W3C ways.. yes I realize opera tries to be compliant but there ARE a lot of idiots out there who arent.. so an abillity to turn this kind of compliance on and off would be nice.. perhaps as an “Open in ANYTHING GOES tab” command..
Also something like Roboform integrated in Opera.. the wand doesnt work on a lot of sites.. it will recall the loginname but the page will fail on the password, dont know what happens there actually but firefox doesnt have any problems on most pages.
oh yea.. and all that stuff everyone has posted in this comment thread and other things I cant think of right now. =)

Awesome job on Opera already folks, but I’d love to see a couple of changes for v10:
- extended widget support (to duplicate some functionality of FF’s extensions, like putting things in the status or menu bars, affecting the display, etc.)
- an update manager for Opera, widgets, themes, etc.
- tabs shown in multiple rows if they become too small (currently, all I can see sometimes are little blue boxes with ‘X’s in them)
- equivalent developer tools to FF, or at least a method to implement them via widgets (like the Web Developer extension for FF)
- downloads should be able to open in the background (user-selectable) or in a new window (user-selectable) and both
- property pages for the bittorrent and irc clients; looking at my window right now, I have no idea where to go to change those options
I’m sure if I gave it some real thought I’d come up with more things, but this is pretty much the list of things that need to be done to make my switch to Opera permanent instead of just “mostly” (that, and the ModX admin is useless in Opera).

Disclaimer: I haven’t tried Opera 9 yet (waiting for final 9.01 build, as I hear 9.0 is really unstable), so these may be included, but:
1. Toolbar buttons for controlling voice settings. For example, it’s extremely annoying having to go into Options just to change the voice speed.
2. Right now, it’s pretty much un-nerving to have the text-to-speech engine in Opera read things like Wikipedia articles, because it pauses every time it hits a bold/italic word or a hyperlink. Using Speak, “%t” isn’t much better because it chokes every time it hits a non-ASCII character. PLEASE FIX THIS if you haven’t already!!

Update Manager: It is the one thing in Firefox that I absolutely love and that Opera doesn’t have. I like the knowledge and security that all I have to do is turn on the browser and I will get the latest security and features sent to me. It can be hard to keep up with security updates and new versions and when they get released. Also, the install/uninstall process in Windows can be time consuming and an update system takes the pain out of keeping applications modern.
using
nothing new, just improve the stability of the browser and existing features like ajax support or css3
using
Better plugin integration on *nix platforms. I know, I know, the platform itself is part of the problem… but today, I’ve been busy 3 hours trying to get Flash to work within Opera without luck – now, this might be because of my own stupidity, but it would be such a relief if Opera had some easy-install for Macromedia/Adobe plugins..
using
The problem with flash in my favourite operating system, FreeBSD, is not the install. It’s the lack of a working flash implementation for BSD systems. Turn on Linsux compat and you can do it without problems but i, personally, feel dirty with that on my system.
using
I’d like to see the same feature that appeared in IE (5?) for Mac OS 9. I could put a whole page into a side drawer.
The idea is that you put the page you are looking at into a separate window. And if clicking on links in that sidewindow the results are shown in the main window.
This was great when clicking through search results from Google or forum threads.

Integrated PGP/GPG Support for the M2 mail client. Come on, this is a geeks browser with no encryption?!
using
Opera is great but my favorite email client M2 need some improvements.
S/MIME signing and encryption: (My biggest disappointment with M2) Not handling the fundamentals of signing/encrypting emails.
Search 1: Need to improve the live update of searches since sometimes the hit-list isn’t being updated when new email arrive/being sent.
Search 2: Should be possible to create a new search by clickning (or preferable a keyboard shortcut) on the sender in the inbox list.
Search 3: The auto-complete in the search field is not recognising all of my contacts. Need to index the contacts better.
Contacts 1: Better import/export of contacts. When importing Opera contacts it might generate duplicate contact entries. Email address should be enough to determine any duplicates.
Contacts 2: Store contacts server-side like any IM. Could be enabled by SSH (or FTP) to a personal online filearea.
Server-side: account settings. (signature, IMAP, POP, contacts) When having a few different email accounts it’s annoying to re-enter the settings when changing computer.
using
I’d like to see automatic statusbar messages flash up (for a few seconds) like “web site contains [53] HTML bugs” when in quirks mode. This problem exposition to users could eventually encourage more web standards adherance amongst developers.
using
Make Opera rendering engine very easy to embed into 3rd party applications like FeedDemon or TopStyle. IE owns this space right now. The embeddable Mozilla/Firefox project is pretty buggy and not really maintained I think.
It would be great to have Opera’s excellent rendering engine available on Windows, OSX and Linux for embedding.
using
I would like to see:
1) x86_64 build
2) plug-ins loaded into a seprate fork/process space
2a) plug-ins should not be capable of crashing the browser
2b) it would be possible to still use 32 bit plug-ins while running the main browser in 64 bit
using
1) better spam filter, or plugin system to let others develop spam filters
2) easy way to navigate between panes on screen. e.g. between preview window and mail list window. See the treo for a great implementation of this kind of finctionality
3) ability to select a section of page, or whole page and open all links, or save all links (downloads)
using
- Pretty much from above comments
- Stop moving the darn autoscroll cursor at the center when I use it, I hate that
- Remove the bloat (widgets, IRC, add them as separate packages or addons)
- Remove the “weird” factor from the whole GUI.
using
1. Reopen closed tab.
2. Keyboard aliases. (map F2 to F12 buttons to URL’s)
using
A. Autocorrect subject lines
1) When finding a newsgroup subject called “Subject B (was: Subject A)”, Opera should automatically cut the former subject (the one in brackets) out in a reply, thus preventing subject lines to grow beyond a sensible length.
2) Make Opera recognize additional (localized) “Re:” strings, like the German “AW:” for “Antwort”. In Germany, people tend to have subject lines that go “Re: AW: Re: AW: Re: AW: Hallo!” because none of the mail clients recognizes the other one’s reply string.
B. Text formatting in plain text mails
Opera should display *bold*, /italic/ or _underlined_ text parts in a plain text mail.
C. Rules
Would be great if Opera had a few more options for filter rules… such as “has attachment”, “older than (date)”, “older than (days)” etc.
D. Fix bug with new newsgroups
When a news server establishes a new group, Opera doesn’t show it in the group list.
using
P.S.: I’m using Maxthon rather than plain old IE. The only reason why I’ve not made a full switch to Opera is because of the convenience of the above 2 feature requests.

I’d like to see Opera GPLed, so I could start using it as well. I don’t like software that’s limiting my freedom.

IMHO, you should remove the Widgets.. or find another way of implementing them.
I have tried many of them and one or two of them brought my cpu usage on it’s knees (aka 100% cpu usage).
They must NOT be displayed on the taskbar. it’s just space consuming.
The absolute majority is trash. I mean SERIOUS trash. They add no functionality whatsoever to the browser..
Make something like Firefox Extensions. Most of them are really usefull. Extensions that can add real toolbars or status bar enhancements. Not floating ones (see the Google-bar widget).
And off course Ruby on Rails support.
Opera is by far the greatest browser at this moment. I mean between IE, Firefox (setup-only, no extensions installed) and Opera it’s surely the best one. But there are some things that i used to do with firefox (spesific extensions, such as Forecast Fox, del.ici.us, MyCurrency, AdBlock Plus, GreaseMonkey, WebDeveloper) that i really miss on Opera and i really can’t do without them.
using
I would still like to see a little more configurability for the toolbars in Opera 10. In Firefox I am able to merge all my toolbars into one, by putting the main buttons/address/search bar all onto the menu bar, then turn the main toolbar off. In Opera I cannot put buttons on the menu bar.
Mainly cosmetic: But in the Default and Windows themes, please.. please.. get rid of the border that stops webpages leaking beautifully to the edge of the screen like in Firefox. At the moment Opera has (in my opinion) an ugly 1 or 2px border just like in IE, that stop the webpage going to the edge of the screen. In current versions of Opera I have to take a copy of the main theme and add the following to change it just to get rid of this ugly and un-necessary IE-like border.
[Browser Skin]
Padding Left = 0
Padding Top = 0
Padding Right = 0
Padding Bottom = 0
Java problems: Because Opera replaces some dialogs in Java applets with it’s own, I have had some problems with some of my Java applets playing up in Opera, primarily the custom login window my applet provides through HttpAuthenticator is broken by Opera because it chooses to provide it’s own dialog instead. Opera should let Java or the Applet (if it is out of the sandbox) handle the default dialog windows, including the security window so a user can choose to “always accept” a signed applet provider, which I can only do in Firefox and IE. Opera should not interfere with this side of Java.
Cache problems: Another reason why I’ve never made the move from Firefox to Opera, because the cache system in my opinion is too vigorous by default. I can reconfigure it not to be off course, but by default Opera seems to disregard some HTTP headers and sometimes cache my PHP scripts that I clearly tell it not to cache, and am forced to press refresh all the time, not good. I don’t know but in my opinion one of the reasons Opera says to be a very fast browser, is because in my opinion it sort of ‘cheats’ a little with the cache and sometimes doesn’t seem to even load the HTTP headers again (I haven’t rechecked this in Opera 9 yet), but rather pull the whole page from the cache every time regardless, which causes a lot of problems with my PHP scripts. When using Opera as a development environment I tend to have to constantly hit refresh because I continue to see old pages, which is a little annoying, so I continue to use Firefox.
using
Something similar to the DownloadThemAll extension from dTa, that will notice the links on the page and download automatically from them. Or at least download multiple images automatically; perfect for pulling graphics from web-creation sites.
No memory leaks. Right now I can look at Opera 9.0 in Activity Monitor and it’s taking up nearly 85MB of RAM with four tabs open. Often I can just sit and watch as it climbs up while I’m not doing anything.
Speech compatibility for Macs. I know Opera on Windows has a speech API (or whatever it is exactly) but it’s odd that the Mac, which has text to speech built into the OS, can read Opera windows.
Those are the big things I can think of. I love Opera and have been using it nearly exclusively since v7.0.
using
Oh yes, and also….
For mails and feeds, why labels? Why not tags? After all, the concept is similar. And why not unliminted number of labels/tags? Rather, why not combine the concept of filter and label to create something more powerful?
using
More extensive tabbed browsing options.
Web page window docking (so I could drag a page to the side of the Opera window and have it stick there on top).
Stop moving the autoscroll cursor to the centre.
using
When I set up Opera for IRC, I had a silly icon pop up in the tray that apparently, can’t be removed without removing my IRC account. That’s nonsense. There’s no reason why the icon is needed, and there are far too many programs around that seem to think it’s all right to stick their icons there.
using
I would like better memory management. Not in the sense that it deal with things like memory leaks. Opera is by far the best browser with memory leaks.
What I mean is more like clearing the DOM elements of div layers which have their visibility changed via javascript, (i.e. DHTML menus). DHTML menus have been around for years, but Opera is the only browser that has problems with them.
They function correctly, until you mouse off; you then get memory ghosts where it didn’t completely clear the hidden DOM element.
That’s my biggest suggestion. Better CSS 3 support would always be nice too.
using
S/MIME support in M2 is crucial. M2 supports TLS client authentication, which is cool, but what I need is the ability to sign and verify signatures of S/MIME signed messages. The US military is even going to require S/MIME signed emails for outgoing email, and M2 can’t meet that basic requirement. PLEASE support S/MIME.
using
Nice to have: XMPP/jabber support. IRC is cool if you don’t want anyone to know who you are, but XMPP is great for real federation.
using
- Support for full SVG 1.1 (including foreignObject)
- Better mixed name spaces (see front point)
- Continue of CSS3 line
- More debugging tools for web-devs
Great work guys. I love the Opera browser!

As a user, I would like something more like Firefox/Mozilla profiles… Even if I can change some preferences from the default folders, it’s not pratical (easy) to do so… I don’t feel so safe…
From dev’s point, probably a similar way to Firefox to build extensions would be very good.
XMPP looks like a good beat too!

Better FTP Support
I’ve seen a bunch of folks indicate they’d like better FTP support. I’d like to see that expanded to allow drag and drop from the file manager (Finder in Mac OS X, Windows Explorer in Windows, etc.).
In addition, it’d be great to have two window panes (remote on left, local on right).
using
1. API for extensions
2. More CSS3 support
3. Debugging tools (like Mozilla’s DOM Inspector)
4. XMPP/Jabber with OTR would also be nice to have
using
Their are two things that prevent me from jumping to Opera:
1) The way that it handles external CSS. It shows the page with plain formatting, then downloads the CSS. I would rather it show the styled page than make me wait for it to apply it.
2) Extensions support in Firefox is great. I don’t use too many, (some add features that Opera already does), however stuff like Gmail notifiers and Scrapbook are all very nice. Widget support I think was a compromise and something different than just having Extensions, but in reality it didn’t really add anything to the browser (for me anyway).

Bugs or Inadequate Documentation
——————————–
B1. View/Encoding menu is confusing and inconsistent. Sometimes checks,
sometimes bullets, sometimes no effect (invalid choice ignored?).
B2. Tools/Appearance/Buttons needs a hint on what it does and how to use it,
else it is easy to get the impression it does nothing. In general, the
“Appearance” dialog that pops up anywhere in response to a “Customize”
choice could profit from a help button with perhaps some tutorial content.
B3. Restore (on Tab context menu) could use an explanation.
B4. Tools/Transfers followed by Detach is not “remembered” as being
detached.
B5. Help could use a search-within-help capability.
B6. Startup should create a “wait/working..” cursor. And BTW, it sometimes
seems to take much longer (>20s) to start — first time after power-up, I
think (yes, even after a clean shutdown).
General Feature Requests
————————
F1. Transfer page: “Time” column is of dubious value — I can’t even
remember now, does it say something useful during the download?. Page
could use a new column showing date/time downloaded. I would also like to
see a close upon completion permanent option, as well as a one-shot
checkbox.
F2. Print-Preview could maybe have a mode-cancel button on the display.
Possible other choices: print/mark this page, print all (marked) pages,
print-setup, etc.
F3. Provide an option to require confirmation of drag & drop operations in
the bookmarks tree. Too-many(!) times, I have inadvertently moved things
around, sometimes without realizing something had been moved. It is
understandably very disturbing to discover that carefully saved and
organized bookmarks have gotten “lost”. Perhaps a general option to force
confirmation of all drag & drop might be useful. It is less troublesome, but
I have also been annoyed by inadvertent dropping of links-to-urls into
toolbars.
F4. Provide an option to hide the iconic menu on the “panel”. The dropdown
chooser-list is quite adequate, and sometimes (often) I would rather
reclaim the horizontal space used by the icons.
F5. Remember and display page load statistics (eg, speed, load-time) with
the page info. Is there any other page information that could be
remembered and displayed — redirections, maybe?
F6. Expand, wherever possible, on the concept of allowing an override of
*any* user preference via a quick-change operation (as F12). I would also
especially like to see a one-shot override which applies only to the
displayed page, perhaps on a separate dialog somewhat like site
preferences, so that multiple changes (and status) could be viewed at
once. (See also: F10, “preference profiles”)
F7. Expand, wherever possible, on concept of restoring factory defaults, and
if possible on the ability to test/undo configuration changes.
F8. Provide a way to disable *all* repeated visual-dynamics: blink, scroll,
animation, flash, javascript-trickery. Some non user-initiated effects are
extremely distracting and annoying. It would be good if a special icon
might indicate something has been inhibited, and if clicking on that icon
allowed the user to explicitly allow (toggle) the inhibited functionality
as desired.
F9. Remember the viewport location within the page, and preserve the
“top-left” across magnification changes (or sidebar open/close/resize). It
is disconcerting to lose one’s place during those operations.
F10. How about allowing save/restore “preference profiles”. Named &
described.
F11. I like and use the author/user selector as well as some of the custom
styles (Disable tables, etc), but I would like to create multiple “user”
stylesheets, have them all appear in the (or another) choice list, and be
able to select the default-user stylesheet, as well.
F12. Bookmark search should leave expanded/hilighted entry upon clear.
Search should also include folder names.
Major design: probably tough, but significant
———————————————
M1. This idea requires inventing new scrollbar display and functional
cababilities. Provide an alternative scroll mechanism that can be used
when pages are especially long with respect to screen height. When the
mouse “thumb” gets small, it is almost useless as an incremental control
because it is impossible to make delicate adjustments. One thought I had
was a second (enlarged, low-contrast?) thumb that surrounded the small one
(when page length is larger than some trigger value), which will scroll
the displayed viewport at a slower rate. This would probably move away
from the location of the small thumb, and snap-back (the shadow-thumb, not
the viewport) to the position surrounding the (slightly-moved) small thumb
when the mouse was released. The slow-scan could continue to function when
the secondary thumb hit the screen top/bottom until mouse is released.

If I could have anything, I’d have a CSS tool in the vein of Xyle Scope. If Opera were the first to get something with that power on something other than a Mac.. Man.

OK I’m sure some/most/all of these have been suggested, but I couldn’t be bothered reading all those replies!
1. Optional install of components. Ie. I don’t want/need bittorrent, mail, IRC in a browser
2. Greater customisation of browser toolbars. Eg. the ability to move the tab bar above the address bar, resizing of elements such as location box, search box
3. Open bookmarks in new tab on middle click, and allow options on right click. eg for deleting bookmarks
4. Option to have “live bookmarks” for RSS like Firefox, this is a great feature IMO.
5. Greater customisation for My Buttons. eg. change icon, tooltip text (possibly just me, haven’t looked into this much)

Hi guys
Great browser! My first browser of choice
How about a built in y-encode/y-decode function for the newsreader?
Also have all the configuration options in the menus rather than having to type configure:opera in the address bar, or at least something hard coded in the menus to point there.

If The Bat! has filters akin to M2, M2 is going away. I’ve used opera since the 3.x days, and still would as a browser, but the lack of S/MIME support is killing me. I’ve seen pleadings for S/MIME in the Opera community groups, but except for a not from Haavard that it might make it in 7.x, nothing from Opera on when it might make it in. I haven’t seen it yet, that’s for sure.
using
1. better font rendering (especially under linux – why some fonts are anti-aliased and others not?)
2. threaded XMLHTTPREQUEST (if the server stuck or couldn’t build up a connection the whole tab is unresponsible for user interaction, e.g. reload)
3. better SVG support (it should be equivalent to adobe’s plugin)
4. a cookie notifier like you get it for site-popups, so u could decide if you want to save it
5. text shadow
6. a more eyecandy rss-viewer (not this ugly listview)
7. “mark mail after 5 seconds as read”-option
8. linux-skin-support: why is the menubar differently painted as under windows o0
9. alt+N -> new tab (not new window)
10. a new pagebar with screenshots instead of titles
11. new session magment (why can’t you select and “save as session” in the window panel, and why can’t I open a saved session as a new instance (not new window!))
12. graphical(!)-previewer for mouse-gestures and keyboard shortcuts
13. os-independent voice-support
14. an “maximum cached files”-option (most documents/images/… are under 10kB, so if you set your disk cache to 50MB the temp folder will take over 120MB on your hdd (filesystem overhead) and there are 10,000 files in it -> opera needs 1min to startup – so why you can’t limit the cache on 1,000 files or similar)
using
15. relative paths in config files, so that u could use opera from a pen-drive or could use our windows-configs under linux too

@David Latapie: Reparse as HTML should be back in the latest weekly. It’s actually in 9.0, the string just doesn’t show up due to a bug. To fix it in 9.0, add the line
-1989918768=”Reparse document as HTML”
to your en.lng while Opera is closed. On the Mac, it’s located inside Opera.app in Contents/Resources/en.lproj.
@Ledjani: Such a system already exists: nicknames. Give your bookmarks nicknames, then either type the name in the address bar or F2 dialog and press Enter or type only as much as is needed in the Shift-F2 dialog.
@slack_prad and Vasudev: Prefs > Advanced > Tabs > [ ] Reuse existing tab
@Razvan Vilt and Julien Goodwin: The default download for Opera 9 is an MSI installer.
@Jammrock: We’ve added rich text editing support in Opera 9.0 and we’re working with at least the FCKeditor and TinyMCE guys to get Opera supported.
@Julien Goodwin: Turn on Fit to window width to quickly wrap plain text.
@Peter Johnson and Goll: Opera 9.0 has content blocking built in.
@Ian:
#1: Tools > Tranfers. Press the View button and choose “Show transfers in background when starting download”.
#6: Opera 9.0 does already.
@Matthew Marshall: Opera 9.0 supports rich text editing and SVG 1.1 Basic.
@Thomas Mueller: You can notify us about site problems via Help > Report a site problem. Note that problems such as crashes should be reported via the BTS (https://bugs.opera.com/wizard/), since they are much more severe than most site problems.
@Wertigon: We support all the CSS properties that apply to colums: border, background, width, and visibility (http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/tables.html#q4).
@David Hammond: Opera 9.0 supports DOM 2 Stylesheets.
@Manuel Enrique L.P.: Opera was the first browser to natively support RSS, if I’m not mistaken….
@aadil: Tools > Tranfers. Press the View button and choose “Show transfers in background when starting download”.
@Adam: Opera 9.0 on Linux does pass the Acid2 test.
@am: You can start Opera 9.0 (on Linux) without the tray icon using the “-notrayicon” command-line switch.
@Papillon: You can reopen a closed tab by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Z. You can customize keyboard shortcuts in the Preferences (Prefs > Advanced > Shortcuts).
@James G Sack: F6 is more or less taken care of by site-specific preferences in Opera 9.

Oh yeah, and how could I forget. Please, PLEASE let us differenciate between session cookies, and cookies with an expiration date. I don’t want to just blindly accept all cookies, but I would like to be able to accept session cookies without having to change my prefs again and again for each site I come across.
Also, the site specific cookie/javascript settings are kinda broken. If you set some odd settings, then delete that site, the settings still remain. You have to add the site again, telling it to use the default settings, and then delete the site again to get it to go back to normal.

I’d actually _very much_ like the possibility to install Opera without mail client and without th (sorry, but I have to say it) stupid widgets. (Not that I hate the widgets, but there is no sense at all in having an application like a browser supply them). Mozilla splits up into single apps to reduce fat & bloat (great), and Opera does the opposite (bad). I’d _really_ like to see that change, since the version 9 browser itself is very sweet; I’ve been using the weeklies for months on windoze.
using
I’ll tell you exactly what Opera needs to do, and it’s important enough to make Opera a huge name.
There needs to be a fix for the problem that Comet half-solves. I’ve provided a semi-reasonable fix, but a lot of people express concerns about the implementation’s viability. If the way I want to do it isn’t right, there’s got to be a way.
There is no reason that AJAX should have the limitations it does.
Make that or something like it happen, and watch Opera single-handedly unfold the future of the web.

* Improve M2: especially searching and filtering. I find that when i try to filter to find specific mailing list posts based on the [subject tag], many unrelated posts get through too.
* Dev utilities: From a web developer perspective, I would like to see more diagnostic style sheets. It would be especially nice to look at a page, and see all the css elements listed with checkboxes (say) to turn borders/highlights on or off
* Chat – support for jabber would be really nice.

@Tim Altman: Regarding your “@magellan: Use “.”.” comment (for an inline search like Firefox), the problem there, unless I’m missing something, is the inability to use the “n”ext hotkey (conveniently near “.”) until the “Finding text” popup slowly fades away in three long seconds.
On one hand that makes sense, since the letter “n” is often *part* of what’s being searched for, but on the other hand, maybe “Finding next” should disappear immediately when the typing stops. It’s not nearly as convenient on my keyboard to reach for F3.
And Firefox also has those nice Find Next/Previous buttons available down there, in addition to an indicator of when you get to the end of the search….
using
Today Opera has a very small market share and it would probably increase tenfold by switching to the GPL license or similar and going open source.
This is the only reason I use/recommend/give others/install Firefox by default. I’ve donated money to the Mozilla project and would donate to Opera with the right license too. I’m pretty sure others would do the same.
Other than that Opera is, although a bit bloated, a great and pretty fast browser.

Another vote for KDE integration. Qt 4.2 would be a nice change to offer a native gtk+ look aswell.
But I want to start a discussion has barely been mentioned as of yet: opensourcing Opera.
The first steps have already been made by making the browser gratis. There is no real strategic value left for Opera to keep the source secret. Opensourcing is a logical next step. It’s cheaper, development is faster, Opera is modelled to the communities needs (thus getting more marketshare), etc. See the successtor of a relative crappy browser like Firefox to see a nice example for this model to work very well.
So, GPL it asap!

I would love to see customisable toolbars. I like to move enerything everywhere, not just on specified toolbars. I like to move toolbars.
I like to move address bar onto the same panel where “File, Edit, View…” options are, because half of that panel is not used (it is empty) – in FF or IE I can move what I want to that “the highest” panel.
I would also like to customize keys, like Ctrl+Click = open new tab in background, without Shift key.
And.. that’s all.

My personal priorities
:XML-XSLT:
For example; format the M2 panel data (Unread, Received, Filters, etc.) using a custom XSLT, so i could make an SVG interface for my email management.
:Almost Full screen:
I like full screen but it’s a bit to spartan for comfortable browsing. An ‘almost full screen mode’ for which i could set show-hide-options for each screen estate taker, would make me very happy.
:Site preferences:
Further improve the ’site preference’ functionality:
- multiple sets of over-ruling stylesheets and javascripts: (a prompt option might be ‘when entering site: always offer me option to select which set to apply.)
- an option that let’s me download those custom settings from a community website. (a prompt option might be ‘when entering a new site, check for custom site prefs in ‘community.opera.com/prefs/opera-approved’ and then let me choose which one to use’.) In this way people could share their hacks to let Opera successfully handle sites that don’t work well in Opera by default.
:Notifications to the user:
For example: avoid letting opera show a message dialog that needs to be clicked upon when it only warns a user: such messages should be listed in a temporary screen overlay: or, even better, in a seperate panel: such a panel could also store the history of earlier messages and simple questions to the user.
For example: if a mail account during mail checking is unavailable: simply add a message to the message list in that panel with simply a button to retry.
:Save file to:
I already posted this request in opera’s “wish-list-forum” but i’ll lobby for it as much as possible: when downloading and saving files to my file system: plz give me the option to ‘open the target folder’ or ‘launch appropriate application’ when finished. Show this option when finding and selecting the target folder for the downloading file.
:Web 2.0:
There are many Web2.0/AJAX components that, unfortunately, are only compatible with IE or Mozilla. Some possible solutions are:
-in addition to the ‘identify as Mozilla’ option, provide an option to let Opera function as much as possible like Mozilla.
- or… somehow, embed mozilla rendering in Opera (as some kind of plug-in). Configure this in the site-preferences.
:Update manager:
As far as i know most opera user are knowledgeable enough to use the current method of updating: so this request, although very handy, has not a high priority, unless Opera is aiming for a broader user audience.
:Interfacing:
Instead of giving panels, the menu, etc, a seperate part of the screen estate, give me the option to decide for each screen-estate-taker to behave itself as a semi-transparent layer over the current screen. A simpel shortcut activates all such types of interfaces. To hide them again, use a timer or mouse-click next to these interface layers, giving the focus back to underlying screen.
Why would this feature be useful? Because it feels more intuitive: it’ll provide a user interface experience that exists half way in the spectrum between dropdown-menus and the current method for showing the panels.

Mulig dette er fikset i v9, men i versjon 8 cacher opera alt for mye. I ASP.net 2.0 blir ikke gridviews bestandig oppdatert i opera, selv om det er gjort endringer i databasen den er knyttet til.
