Opera for Nintendo DS delayed one month

The release of the Opera browser for the Nintendo DS will be delayed by one month.

The new release date is set for July, according to Nintendo’s president, who said that Nintendo took more time to polish Opera. The previously reported due date was June.

The Opera browser for Nintendo DS will be sold as an optional DS card. Users simply insert the card into the Wi-Fi enabled Nintendo DS, connect to a network, and begin browsing on two screens. As of now it will only be available to Nintendo DS users in Japan.

The browser is based on the same core as the Opera desktop browser.

Last month Nintendo also announced that the Opera browser would ship with the Nintendo Wii. No release date has been set for the Wii yet, but the Nintendo executive promised that it would be announced before September.

Have we got a price yet?

Does anyone know if the DS browser is going to be based off of the version of Opera that passes the Acid2 test? Because right now, the stable version of Opera doesn’t pass the Acid2 test (afaik). And also, will it be able to run JavaScript? It should be able to, since that’s not like Flash or Java (which are both plugins from another company) but I just want to be sure…

K3V!N, I believe the it will run Opera 8. But by the time it’s released in July, Opera 9 should be out already, so maybe they’ll already include Opera 9.

With regards for JavaScript support in the DS, I don’t know. But here is a quote from my post on the Wii announcement:

“For our Wii console launch in 2006, we required a browser that was fast and secure with support for the latest standards including AJAX. Opera proved perfect for our purposes and is an exceptional addition to both the Nintendo DS and the Wii console,” said Genyo Takeda, senior managing director and general manager, Integrated Research & Development Division, Nintendo Co., Ltd.

AJAX is based on JavaScript, which leads me to believe that the DS will support JavaScript too.

Robin, I recall reading somewhere that the Opera DS card will cost around $30 (US dollars). But don’t quote me on this.

Well this rules out one of the speculations for June 20th.

Does anyone know if an imported Opera browser will work in the US?

Yeah, it will. Nintendo DS cartridges aren’t nation specific, it will work. I might import one from liksang.
