Nintendo Wii to include the Opera browser
Published May 10th, 2006 9:07 AM EDT By Daniel Goldman
Opera today announced that Nintendo’s much anticipated new generation game console, Wii (pronounced “We”), will use the Opera browser.
This is not the first partnership between Nintendo and Opera. A few months ago Nintendo announced that the Nintendo DS will include the Opera browser too.
The Opera browser for Nintendo DS will be sold as an optional DS card. Users simply insert the card into the Wi-Fi enabled Nintendo DS, connect to a network, and begin browsing on two screens. As of now it will only be available to Nintendo DS users in Japan.
Users of the Wii console will be able to browse the Internet using their consoles. Navigating via the innovative new Wii Remote controller, users can visit Web sites in between gaming sessions even while the console is on standby mode.
The Opera browser will be stored on Flash ROM which is almost as fast as a telephone or television and can be powered up in just a few seconds.
“For our Wii console launch in 2006, we required a browser that was fast and secure with support for the latest standards including AJAX. Opera proved perfect for our purposes and is an exceptional addition to both the Nintendo DS and the Wii console,” said Genyo Takeda, senior managing director and general manager, Integrated Research & Development Division, Nintendo Co., Ltd.
The Nintendo DS browser is scheduled for release in Japan this summer. Nintendo has not yet announced its global launch plans for this product.

Umm, those screenshots are from the DS browser, not the Wii.

Tim, thanks for pointing that out. I’ve corrected it.

Interested in a little riddle challenge?
Take a look at the Opera Community site look for something odd in the “Spotlighted users” section (Hint: you gotta mouse around a bit).
Some require thinking, others you may need to search around the web for a bit of info.
The first 30 to solve this challenge will get an Opera T-Shirt or some other Opera gadget.

Where to send the competition entries to?
using
Simon,
I believe you’d know the answer, if you solve all the clues of the riddle.
using
Ugh.. I’m stuck on clue two.
Dumb frogs.
using
Cool! Any idea whether the Wii version will be based on Opera 9 or 8? (9 I hope — particularly since that would imply a final release of Opera 9 by summer!)
using
I’m not sure about the Nintendo Wii, but the browser for the Nintendo DS is based on Opera 8.5.
using
Good grief! this is driving me crazy, and I know the answer is right in front of my face.
using
Eddie, dont worry, i’m stuck on second clue too. :/
using
so…. has ANYONE solved this yet? Dan G?
using
Yes - someone has solved it.
using
The Frog, don’t post the answer to the riddle here
using
Well I give up. I would love for someone to email me as soon as the contest is over.

The frog thing is a bit far-fetched, but not impossible

any tip for CLUE FOUR?
using
Ok- I still can’t stop trying to figure this out… I tried to force myself to think about something else- but I keep going back. This really sucks because the more I think about it the more I’m going to be pissed when it’s some obvious “duh” type thing.
grr…
using
Where the heck am I supposed to go to find the second clue?!! What forums are they talking about? Aye.
using
I’m on the second clue, also stuck. I have a hunch but I don’t know if it’s true…
using
I’m also stuck on clue 4
using
The Frog is using Links as his browser.. Hmmm, maybe I should try to solve using that
using
…well, I did try using Mini 2.0 to see if anything got served up different.
It’s probably a silly anagram that I can’t figure out or something.
using
People, if you do figure out the clues, please don’t post them here. Don’t ruin it for others.
using
well, it has been several days now, and let me jsut say that it’s easy to get as far as Clue Four, but then I believe it becomes vague.
Without revealing too much, the fourth clue implies you are supposed to search the Opera blogs for something. Problem is, search results chagne all the time as blogs are created and updated. I think we need a better clue.
using
I too am stuck on Clue 4. Here is what I have got so far.
The only relevant info I got from the Clue 4 page was the quote:
“Mr Fibonacci tried searching for his blog 13 times from the start because he forgot his username on my.opera.com/.”
and the number “200618” from the sign my guestbook remark.
Using this info I have tried every combination of URL that the Opera Community uses to no avail. I even tried combinations of user names using Fibonacci’s first name Leonardo and the numbers 144 and 233 from the Fibonacci number sequence. Here are a list of the URL forms I used:
http://my.opera.com/NAME
http://my.opera.com/NAME/blog/show.dml/BBBBBB
http://my.opera.com/NAME/archive/monthly/?month=YYYYMM
http://my.opera.com/NAME/archive/monthly/?day=YYYYMMDD
Where combinations of Fibonacci’s username are substituted for NAME, the number 200618 is substituted for BBBBBB (blog number currently in 250XXXs), and YYYY MM DD for year month and day.
Got nowhere with that…so anybody else got something?

Now that you have posted #4, could you explain #2? (with the frogs?)
using
I guess I should use spoiler tags eh… So if you don’t want any info about clues you have yet to reach, don’t read this.
***********SPOILER***************
When your trying to make sense of Clue Two it is best to think of it with a British accent. In other words think about looking for work, and keep in mind it is all about opera. So far only brainJ and dstorey both Opera employees have been implicated as contributers to this Wii Hunt. But I digress. It should get you here: Ultimate Spoiler
