Yahoo AU uses the Opera Man
Published April 17th, 2006 1:21 PM EDT By Daniel GoldmanYahoo Australia has added the ‘Opera Man’ on its homepage.
The hitching Opera Man was first introduced as part of the Opera 8 campaign. It was never really popular in the Opera community.
But it’s apparently popular with some after all.
Opera doesn’t have a mascot at this time. Some in the Opera community suggested that the Opera Man might become Opera’s new mascot, though Opera denied this multiple times.
There was actually talk in Opera about introducing an official mascot, but that seems to have died down.

Hat tip to santouras.

The Opera Man is retarded. It’s hard enough to build credibility in the U.S. with a browser named “Opera” in the first place. A hitchhiking guy in a cape doesn’t exactly help. Yes, a cool mascot would do us a world of good, assuming they pick the right one.
It shows that they have sense of humor and are confident in their product enough to be able to joke about it.
>Opera doesn’t have a mascot at this time
No! we already have a mascot.
She is called ‘OPERA-TAN’.

She is famous in Japan!
i hope that you like her.
Anyone else notice that dude’s wearing a Power Rangers costume?
Any lawsuits pending? $-)
As far as I know this is just some silly stock photo.
What was the other company that stole the Opera Man not long after Opera 8 was released?
And no.. it’s not a stock image, it’s an Opera employee…. in fact according to Olli it was Håvard dressed as power ranger before going on a date! :p
I think Olli was joking.
d3bruts1d, it was some German site that also used this image.
I was laughing as soon as I saw the Opera-Man
“It was never really popular in the Opera community.” Hah, rubbish! Me really liked it good. Of course we knew Captain Opera’s time among us was limited, he had others to save, but it was great knowing him as long as it lasted.
That he’s found a fresh new life in Australia, a very long hike from Norway I might add, makes me very happy and almost a little choked up.
I liked OperaMan too. Wasn’t sure about the Power Rangers connection but who else was going to notice?
You can’t tell me the Bork edition wasn’t goofy, but it got more publicity than anything other than the CEO swimming the Atlantic!
Opera’s marketing strategy IS being goofy. It’s a copy of IKEA’s unbelievably successful marketing strategy. It’s saying we’re so good, we don’t have to worry about being credible. Think how powerful that is. Look at how recognition of Opera as being the best browser has grown in the last year.
IKEA’s is better, of course. In the same way IKEA tease us for being too conservative, Opera could tease IE/Firefox users for putting up with lesser browsers.
Maybe some joke about how Norwegians believe that hell is place full of PCs running IE.
Someone send this to the marketing guys in Opera.
Medina and the IRC Crew already decided on a Cow being the Official Opera Mascot. MooOpera™ > you.
OperaMan looks a lil ***
Opera Man blows donkey nuts.
