Nearly 30,000 downloads of Opera Mini each day

Since its launch in late January, Opera Mini has amassed for than 2 million users.

Instead of requiring the phone to process Web pages, Opera Mini uses a remote server to pre-process the page before sending it to the phone, which makes it perfect for phones with very low resources, or low bandwidth connections. Opera Mini’s download size is only 55 KB.

Pages are reformatted and compressed before being sent to the phone, so they only use about one fifth of their normal amount of traffic. After Opera Mini’s compression, the average Web page size is between 10 and 20 kilobytes (KB).

The daily number of Web pages surfed with Opera Mini exceeds four million. Opera has quite a few servers to handle this load, which currently reside in Oslo, Norway. Opera is looking into setting up servers in other parts of the world too. But Opera’s Eskil Sivertsen is quick to point out to Opera Watch that tests have shown that the speed is not noticeably reduced even if the servers are in Oslo. Most of the Opera Mini users are in the USA and Russia.

Opera Mini is making a big impact in the mobile industry; Opera has signed deals with many phone operators to distribute Opera Mini to their customers.

Opera Mini runs on all phones that support Java, which most already do. It is estimated that there are more than 700 million Java enabled mobile phones in the market.
