Opera browser reaches 100 million downloads

Opera has a page on their site which says that the Opera browser has been downloaded one hundred million times.

Since Opera hasn’t made any official comment on this, I assume that this download count doesn’t reflect that of Opera 8 only. It is most likely a total count of downloads from previous versions as well. The most recent information that I got was that Opera was averaging between 80,000 to 100,000 downloads per day since going ad-free, so you do the math.

Unless this download count also includes downloads of the Opera browser for mobile devices, in which case it would exclusively refer to downloads of Opera 8.

Neither Opera’s homepage nor the community site page link to this page as of this time (I found this page via Asa).

If you take a look at the URL of the page, you’ll notice the word “Google” in it. Perhaps this is in reference to some kind announcement related to Google that will take place in the coming week.

I sent an email to Opera inquiring more information about this, and I will pass it along when I get a response.

Update 1/15/06 12:49 PM: Opera spokesman Eskil Sivertsen just sent me a reply saying that this page was just a landing page for Google ads that some people at Opera have been working on.

The number 100 million was just an element that one of Opera’s designers added to the page during the design process and then forgot to remove it. “Some people were playing around with ideas and that page was never meant to be made available online”, he wrote.

Opera has just updated the page and removed the reference to 100 million downloads.

Below is a screenshot of the page before the update.

Oh my gosh, what’s the Google thing about?

According to my quick and lazy calculation, there’s been 116 days (september 20 to january 14) since Opera went free.

116 * 80 thousand is 928 million. At about 87 thousand downloads per day, you reach 100 million.

When added up, I don’t find it too hard to believe the number reflects only Opera 8 :)

I might be horribly wrong though, but I hope not :P

Note to self: Don’t try to do math when drunk and tired… my above post is totally wrong :(

After reading the comments about Asa’s post, I agree that “hopefully this number is cumulative, otherwise there is something seriously wrong with Opera 8 if the number is just for Opera 8″.

LOL looks like Opera gets desperate… Maybe being free is not enough, they should pay for using their browser.

I think that’s the page for Google Pack (at pack.google.com).

  10. 10 blah

Asa always ******* for no reason :P

Asa strikes again… is this guy frustrated or what? :-/

  12. 12 Sam

Google Pack already has a browser. I’d expect that http://pack.google.com/product_opera.html would exist if it was supposed to be for the pack. But, as of yet it doesn’t.

Good thing Opera isn’t part of Google Pack. That package has the worst of the worst (Symantec?! Real?!). It says a lot that Firefox is in that crappy pack of software… :)

The link doesn’t work. What was there?

  16. 16 Anonymous

Darn, I hadn’t bothered to try the link, I just copied what was under “permalink”.

    See here:

    Darn!

The reason the link didn’t work is that the post was deleted.

Anyway, it was Opera’s rijk saying that the claim hadn’t been verified and approved and was put in the screenshot by an over-zealous Opera employee.

But why did he delete his post?

  18. 18 Anonymous

haavard now claims that rijk didn’t post in the thread… But I saw his post :/

  19. 19 Anonymous

You didn’t see his post since he never posted. Olli did.

But the real question still remains: How did Asa find that page?

  20. 20 Daniel Goldman

Asa may have gotten to that page via the Google Ad, if indeed Opera already advertized through their ads.

  21. 21 Anonymous

It was rijk, I swear! Then again, it might have been olli posting as rijk, which is why the post was deleted.

    Me posting as Rijk?
Nop I made a post and deleted it again logged in as me :-)

This is the second time on 2 days someone mistakes me for Rijk.

What a complement for Rijk :-p

Seems you hacked rijk’s forum account, and he won’t be too happy about it ;D

Oh well. I will just have to accept that at the age of 46, your memory starts failing you. But why did you delete the post? It was there for a very short period of time, maybe a minute or two.

  24. 24 Anonymous

I deleted it as I fel’t it was abit clumsy written and I prefered someone that could articulate themself better to answer :-)
Haven’t you also made hasty posts before? :-)

Rijk would kick my butt if he thought I had his login :-D

    -Olli

  25. 25 Anonymous

Yes, I did… But I realized they were hasty only when it was too late ;)

    So…

haavard gets beaten by olli gets beaten by rijk gets beaten by ???

    …MEEEEE!!!!1111oneone!

  28. 28 Anonymous

After someone mentioned Google ads, Asa claimed to have found the page listed as an ad with a Google search.

So basically it seems that he clicks his competitor’s ads on Google. In other words, click fraud?!
